Overclocking for folding? 9600GSO

How should i overclock my 9600GSO for max PPD?

in rivatuner do i just go into the System tweaks tab and increase the shader clock bar?

and make it performance 3d?

Everything helps but shaders are where the points start coming in. I’m using the OC tool from EVGA myself; it’s dead on easy to use. I have the shaders pushed to 1800 ish with the core bumped up a bit. Every card, even ones from the same company will react differently but if all the card is doing is folding figure 4500 to 5500 PPD.

I also have the fan set to full and it’s still quiet and you just can’t have enough cool:cool:

rivatuner won't let me overclock the second GPU, like it has no information about the clock speed and all that?

i restarted and everything?
 
You have to choose the card man. There is a little pull down list near the TOP of the window. That's how mine works anyhow. It will let you switch between the cards.
 
Also, being folding depends so much on shaders, a lot of people have gotten away with under-clocking their core and memory to save some electricity and heat on the card. This has opened up a bit of headroom on the shaders.

Increase the fan speed a bit, and just keep bumping the shaders until the work unit crashes is what I did. Then just back it down a notch and get foldin.

Just up the shaders to start with.
The memory clock speed and the core clock speed both have a smaller effect on PpD.

The shader clocks move in 54Mhz jumps.
I use RivaTuner to alter the clock speeds and keep an eye on temps and the ATItools "Scan for Artifacts" test to check the overclock.
Up the shader speed 54Mhz, then run the test.
If you see artifacts within a couple of mins then you have gone to far.
Otherwise stop the test, up the shader another 54Mhz, run the test.
Once you find the linit of the card, drop it down 54Mhz and retest for a bit longer.

The memory and core speed move in 9 Mhz steps.
If the card is not to hot then you can try upping them.
But keep testing for artifacts after each step moved.

You may well have to set the fan at 80-100% speed to keep the card cool, stable and artifact free.

I've found that if I get artifacts then the client will not run stable on my cards, no artifact equals a stable client bar the odd bad workunit.

I think thats a driver related error.
Did you let Windoze pick the driver it thinks you want to use or did you point it at the one you want it to use ??
You may want to clean the old drivers out and reinstall them by hand for both cards.

if you are using Riva tuner in Windows XP, you will need a VGA dummy for it to play nice. I couldn't overclock my other GPUs with Riva until I made dummies.

That is weird because on my PC, I didn't need any dummy plugs to overclock my cards. I've never had a monitor plugged in to my second card except for one time when Windows decided it was the main card for no obvious reason and I had to switch it so I could see.

how do i do this?

i just installed the driver like normal and when it installs it detects both video cards and sets up the drivers for them?

that is what your suppose to do right?
 
does anyone know what i should do?

i can't overclock until i fix this because if i overclock the first GPU the PPD on the second GPU go down, they both need to be at the same clock settings or you get that low PPD problem.
 
Both cards should be independent of each other.

If I alter the clock speed of one of my 9800GTX's, it makes no difference to the other 9800GTX in the box.
Its the same with the 8 clients running on 4 9800GX2's in one box.

Do you have a monitor/kvm/dummy plug attached to the second card ??
You may need one attached first time you try to overclock the card.

Control Panel -> System Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Display Adapter.
Right click on your vid card -> Properties -> Driver.
Its the last 5 numbers of your driver version that you are interested in.
Version 6.14.11.7735 = 177.35 when you look to download it.

To update the drivers by hand.
Update drivers -> Install from List -> Dont seach -> Have Disk -> Browse -> You need to find the "nv4_disp.inf" file where you downloaded the CUDA drivers.
I do that when I setup all my cards.

no i am just using windows xp so -forcegpu nvidia_g80 works

i will try and boot up my machine with the monitor connected to the other one and see if that works
 
my system wont display anything on the screen if i connect the monitor to the second gpu?
 
i installed nvidia system tools and same exact thing, it wont give any information or let me overclock the second GPU?
 
Can you expand and shrink the second desktop's size in Display Properties -> Settings ??
And will it stay an altered size if you hit "Apply" ??

My second card just shows my Windows background if I move the monitor cable over while the computer is on.

no i can't

the resolution is 640x480 and 8 bit color ,and if i increase the resolution and hit apply it will go right back to what it was?

what does this mean?

it is also "Default Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 9600GSO"
 
i don't understand any of this, the card is working just fine and folding away but it's like i can't change any of the settings,

however in rivatuner i can change the fan speed just fine?
 
I would say you're drivers not install correctly.

Do you have a second monitor, a kvm switch or adummy plug that you could use while you reinstall the drivers ??

No i don't, is there any way to get around that?

How would i reinstall the driver, i thought you had to have both cards installed at the same time?
 
Try switching the box off.
Plug the monitor into the second card and power on.
If it works, you should end up with just the Windoze background on screen.
If you do then hot swop the monitor back to the first card and see if you can now alter the second cards speed.

Is there an electrical component shop local, that you pick up 3x 75 ohm resistors in.
If there is, I would get three and make a dummy plug.
If you cannot get 75 ohm then anything between 75-100 ohm will do.
Or even get three online to make a dummy with.
It makes setting up twin cards with one monitor so much easier.

If your useing XP, you only need to use the dummy while your setting the box up as XP remembers theres a monitor plugged in.
If your useing Vista, you need to leave the dummy plugged in as Vista doesn't remember the monitor plugged in.

You mentioned something about the PPD sum was same which sounds like you may be running your GPU clients on the same GPU. Ensure that each instance has a different GPU assigned (i.e. "-gpu 0" & "-gpu 1" and so on...) gl.

I had the same issue... I fixed it by removing all but the first GPU and uninstalling ALL the GPU drivers. And then I restarted

I got the 178.13 package with PhysX support (the newest drivers from the CUDA page don't work for me with more than 1 GPU...) and, MAKING SURE TO SELECT CANCEL every time XP brings up a new hardware prompt... I installed the GPU drivers.

Did I full reboot, then shut down and installed the second card.

Windows automatically installed the driver for all subsequent cards (it didn't even bring a "found new hardware" dialog up...) and, after a full re-start, I could select them in the monitor setup tab of the view properties... But still not Rivatuner.

I then made sure the 2nd GPU was set to "Extend the windows desktop" and was set to "Analog Monitor" in the nVidia control panel. Rivatuner then worked flawlessly.

Make sure you're folding with 2 seperate instances of the client, with the -gpu X flags set (where X is the card you want the respective client to use, starting with 0 as the primary display device) and the MACH ID's set properly.

i played with tuning mine again 2 days ago. and heres the best setup i can get.(i use evga precision).
core-612
shader-1836
memory-891
fan-80%
temp-62*C
with this setup im getting 5000-5200 keep in mind im also running 2 smp clients at the same time on the stock power supply.
also, i have the dual slot 9600GSO, if you have single slot you might need to set the fan to 100%
hope this helps a bit.
