Overclocking E6550 on stock cooler

First off here is what I can tell you about my computer right now:

Power Supply: Hi-Power 700W
Case: Cheap Casecom Black £18 case, not very well cooled
Motherboard: Asus P5N-E 650i SLI (BIOS rev. 1301)
Processor: Intel E6550 C2D 2.33Ghz 1333FSB
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Twin2X4096-6400C4 DDR2 800Mhz (4-4-4-12 2T @ 2.1V)
Graphics: 1GB Inno3D Nvidia GTX280

Changes I've made:
Memory: 4-4-4-12 2T @ 2.08V ---> 4-4-4-12 1T @ 2.17V
Processor: 2.33Ghz 1333FSB @ 1.44V(Auto) ---> 2.8Ghz 1600FSB @ 1.25V
-- Both stable --

Temperatures:
Idle: 39*C Core Temps, 36-37*C CPU Temp(tCase)
Load: 66*C Core Temps, 50-53*C CPU Temp(tCase)

Now I'm on stock cooling. I plan to get an AC7 and some AS5 once I get the chance, but for a while that's not an option. So I was wondering whether it's possible for me to push my CPU any further with stock cooling?

I got it to boot earlier with 2.975Ghz 1700FSB, and 850Mhz (4-5-5-15 2T) with 1.35V CPU voltage, 2.17V on the RAM and 1.39V on the NB. It seemed stable, but after 2 minutes of running Orthos the Core Temps were already at 70/71*C. Though the tCase temp only got up to around 53-55 still.

Any suggestions?

Although the stock coolers of the conroes are of decent build quality and has some heft to them, they are not meant for overclocking. Not from my experience anyway and I'm sure many will also agree as well.

You can knock off 10c or possibly more with an AC7 upgrade. Till then, it's probably in your best interest to keep your temps below 65c even if it means lowering your overclock a bit.
 
you could also since im pretty sure intel used the same stock cooler for all the conroes.. just overclock the processor to the fastest stock clock on what ever the highest conroe processor is.. it should be able to handle that.. i mean unless they shipped different version heatsinks like amd did..
 
Late reply, the highest conroe is the E6850 @ 3Ghz. So I could try that, or possibly 3.15Ghz. The thing is, I can get it to boot at 2.98Ghz, but the core temps are at 71*C after 5 minutes of Orthos or Prime95. Haven't got it to boot with 3.15Ghz (my next milestone) yet, but I believe that's due to the northbridge voltage being low, I currently have the NB voltage set to 1.39, and I believe 1.56 is recommended for over 3Ghz ocs on my processor + motherboard. The problem with 1.56 is some people argue that you'll *need* an aftermarket NB heatsink or it'll get too hot, due to my board being poorly cooled, but then a few others claim to be running with it fine.

The question is. Go for it, or not?

The e6550 runs pretty hot. I was getting 60c stock clocks with the stock cooler. Loads were hitting 75ish. I gave overclocking a shot with the stock cooler and was ok til I hit about 2.8 before it just got too hot for my comfort.

I got an AC freezer7 and now idle at 35c. At 3.0ghz it never sees 70c (usually stays in the mid 60s under load). I stopped seeing gains in the games I play above 3.0, so I kept it there.

Alright, so what do you guys think about the Northbridge voltage (for people that know about the P5N-E and it's badly cooled NB). Is 1.56 safe?

Extra thermal compound is not necessary with the ACF7Pro. It comes with preapplied compound that is just as good if not better than AS5.
 
I've got it running at 3ghz now. I had to leave my ram at 800 since it didn't like being overclocked, so its actually running at 799. Anyway, running prime95 on blend atm, hopefully it'll be stable. Temps are hitting 73 under load.(posting from my mobile since i'm about to go to sleep)
 
I have a 9700 LED I never used - you guys think the AC Freezer 7 is a better cooler? I can sell the 9700 LED for like $50 on ebay. :)
 
They are probably about equal. I would sell both and just grab a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 or OCZ Vendetta 2.
 
Alright, update. It's stable at 3Ghz. It's nice seeing Crysis run like a charm at 1440x900, all settings very high, 2x AA. Though I never tested it while my CPU was at stock clocks.

Think I should try to go for 3.15? Or wait until I can afford cooling (will be a long time sadly)
