Overclocking E4500

Hey guys, im a n00b around here and especially to Overclocking...never overclocked anything before. I read through the guide, but i'd like some reasurance on somethings as the guide seems very general.

My PC:
Mobo: MSI P6N SLI-FI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
Ram: 2 GB G.Skill DDR2 800
CPU: Intel E4500 @ 2.2 ghz (11x multiplier, 800 FSB)
GPU: MSI 8600GT OC Edition

I have plenty of case airflow ( 5 case fans) and i got an ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro and some arctic silver paste coming on monday.

I wanna overclock it, and i've seen some people with the E4400 or even the E4500 that have it overclocked to 3.3 and even one at 3.6 ghz.

But it all seems so confusing. How do i know if my ram needs to be overclocked or underclocked, how high should i move the FSB on my cpu at first. I want to try not to touch the voltages, how high do you think i'll get with stock voltage.

Do you think i'll be able to get a decent overclock with my setup?

I'd start with 33Mhz increments to the FSB at first. Once you get to a setting that won't POST, increase the voltage. Once you get to a high voltage 1.5v, increment the FSB in lesser increments.

Keep your CPU voltage at or under 1.55v, and keep your CPU core temps under 60°C. The chip's max temp is around 85°C, but don't worry, the chip should shutdown before any damage can be done.

The NB chipset gets rather HOT on that board when OC'ing, so make sure you keep it cool once it becomes too hot to touch. Before touching it, ground yourself.

Formulas for Intel platform @ 1:1 settings: (base FSB speed is SDR, or single data rate)
(CPU Multiplier) x [Base FSB speed] = CPU Clock speed
2 x [Base FSB speed] = RAM speed (DDR: double data rate)
4 x [Base FSB speed] = Effective FSB speed (QDR: quad data rate)

On Intel platforms, running the RAM higher than a 1:1 ratio with the CPU is, for the most part, useless, so don't bother trying to do so. If the BIOS does it for you, just let it. All you need is a 1:1 config, though. Here's some possible clock speeds (as always with OC'ing, your results will vary):

E4500: 11 × 200 = 2.2Ghz, DDR2-400 << STOCK speeds
E4500: 11 × 266 = 2.9Ghz, DDR2-533 << Easy OC
E4500: 11 × 300 = 3.3Ghz, DDR2-600 << Great OC
E4500: 11 × 333 = 3.6Ghz, DDR2-667 << Awesome OC

ok, thanks a lot very helpful. Never until yesterday did i ever pay attention to the northbridge, but mine is very hot already :( i guess i should try and get a better cooler for it if i can.
 
i knew that much. I dont think i have a way of getting a fan in there. there's barely any room between it and the cpu heatsink. and below it is the gfx card. maybe if i find a way to mount a fan in the 3 empty 5.25 inch bays that are sort of next to it...i already have 5 case fans...
 
You could try a Scythe Kama Bay. I used a "wherever PCI" bracket from sunbeam to mount a fan over the chipset area of one of my builds. There's also a zalman bracket that will do the same thing.

I used a 60mm fan mounted on a pillar of brass motherboard standoffs (about five I think) - there was a mobo screwhole right where I needed it - for one mounting screw, and used a plastic drywall screw anchor jammed into the fins of my large NB heatsink plus a screw for the opposite corner.

Works well.
 
ok i got my cooler, put it in, OC'd temps now which my pc is fairly idle, only like 5-10 cpu usage, are at 30 C, highest i seen was 38, and my cpu is at 3.0 ghz
11x1091 i tried at 3.1 and 3.2 ghz and windows would blue screen on start up. is this my max? or do i need to raise the voltage or something?

What's your voltage at?
 
1.2, but in cpu-z it goes from 1.2 to 1.208 and i've seen it fluctuate other times too....

Is it 1.2v in the BIOS?

3Ghz means your FSB SDR is at 273Mhz. Your voltage is pretty low, if its 1.2v in the BIOS, so you can raise it higher to get 3.2Ghz (11 x 291; 291 x 4 = 1164Mhz FSB QDR). Keep the CPU voltage at or below 1.55v and keep the load temps at or below 60°C.

Well yah, but its obviously unstable at the current voltage setting and the speed you want. So, to get the speed you want, you'll need to raise the voltage, since you obviously have room for higher voltage/temps. You basically have some headroom if you want to use it. You could either raise the voltage, or live with the lower speed... its up to you. Keep settings below those thresholds and you should be fine either way.
 
Go into your bios, set your FSB to 400, set your memory to run at a 1:1 ratio, and set your multiplier to 8.

That should give you 3.2ghz w/o stressing your memory at all, and with an M0 stepping processor that should be doable on stock voltage or with a minor voltage increase.
 
thanks guys, i got it at 3.2 right now and it's running great, ran some benchmarks to stress it out a little bit, raised the voltage, although im unsure of what i did with it( it said cpu voltage: and it was on 0.0000, i put it up to .1500, and it booted with 291x11 for 3200) cpu temps right now are only up to 35 C so i think im good :D
 
If you can get 3.2ghz at 291x11, try 400x8. Higher fsb = more performance. Your board should be capable of 400fsb. Make sure you lower your ram ratio to 1:1.
 
how would it be greater performance if the clock ratio ends up being the same? and how do i set the ram to 1:1 i have DDR2 800 would it already be 1:1 if i did that?
 
I was able to easily hit 3.6 ghz with my E2140 chip on an ABIY IP35-E and Ultima 90 Cpu cooler. If i change my chip to E4500 (11X multi) do you think i will be able to hit 4ghz+????
 
I have 2 GB Ballistix Ram, I want more L2 Cache as i play crysis which is very L2 Cache sensitive. I was wondering whether to buy E8400 or some cash and invest in an E4500 if it goes 4Ghz+? Will the 11x multiplier help?

I doubt you'll reach 4Ghz with an E4500. You're better off going with an E8400, if you can find one for under $225 (hopefully around $200). Otherwise, the Q6600 would be a better value, since its now $255 (or $200 at microcenter).
