overclocking cpu due to the freeze!

ok, its freezing outside, and its freezing inside! (student accomodation!)

currently have my qx6700 running at 3.4ghz and temps are

idle 8oC
stressed 25oC

id like to try push it some more!

my motherboard is an asus p5q deluxe with a v8 cooler.
corsair 800d case and a 5770 gpu.

id also like to overclock the gpu.

so starting with the cpu, what should i do?
i had no problem pushing it from 2.ghz to 3.4ghz by simply increasing the fsb but i dont think thats gonna do it to get any higher.
 
I'd be telling the school to turn the heat up. You don't pay to freeze.

but while it's cold in there take advantage. :)

Just start increasing your FSB like 10Mhz at a time until it becomes unstable then bump up the CPU voltage until it's stable. You'll eventually hit a wall where no matter how much voltage you give the CPU it won't become stable. You may need to bump up voltage to the NB at that point. If that stabilizes it then try backing off the CPU voltage a little.

Baby steps, and document the settings that work the best for any given FSB/Multiplier config.

I hope you mean 80 F idle and 250 F Stressed. At those temp that thing should be bursting into flames.

um, somebody would be getting an earful from me, a long time ago actually, once it got down to 65 degrees or so i would have been complaining and threatening
 
wouldn't it be a better idea to reach for a dependable overclock that won't crash and burn as soon as the weather heats up again?


its 17f outside my house today. inside, its a nice 70f :)

yeah but its usually 3 months before it heats up here, so id reduce the overclock at that stage.
