Anyone else get annoyed by people complaining that they didn't get their "desired overclock."

I mean your pushing the hardware (whatever it may be) beyond what it is intended to do.

Shouldn't you be happy that you can do it at all?

It's just a bit frustrating when certain things happen. For example, my barton 2500+@3200+ NEVER sees north of 40'C, that's the highest it's ever seen, and that's when my case temp skyrocketed to 32'C because someone opened the heat vent to my room :p But, if I try to clock the fsb even ONE mhz higher, I get errors etc.

My video card, a 9600 pro which is supposed to be one of the best oc'ing cards, struggles to do 470 core/330(660) mem. I've seen more people than I can account for hit 500+ core and 350+ mem on their 9600 pro's, so yeah, it kinda sucks. I don't go out of my way to bitch about it, but it IS frustrating to see someone with what's supposed to be an identical part getting better results than me.

I can't hit above 2.4ghz @ 200x12 at 32C idle..

I memtested my ram and found I had a faulty stick.. Warranty from Corsair here we come.. With my good stick, I've been messing around with timings and FSB increases, nothing insane yet.. I'm waiting for a free day (which is rare) when I can play around with shit.. 2.5ghz on air would be sweet..

ok....??

Well I just wanted to post this topic, and see what responses I got.

I'm not hear to bash anyone or anything like that.
I do believe that overclocking helps the industry.

Especially since I have a 2.4c :)

And how might I ask? From all the *hit I've seen the last couple of years, if anything, overclocking hurts us all. People try to push to far and they fry their hardware. What do you see them do all the time? Oh, I'll just RMA it. So we all pay increased costs for mis-used warranty claims.

I myself have never RMA'ed a single piece of equipment that I destroyed by overclocking. As soon as I overvolt an item, that's it. I'll never RMA it. I've seen guys over on certain forums RMA Athlon 64's because they killed the onboard memory controller by overvolting the damn thing. Talk about classless. Anyhow, end of rant.

Ahh, yes it is. I am wanting to get this with high FSB instead of high mult (15 x 166). My PC2700 is gonna have to go.

True, there are plenty of pricks who will RMA things that was THEIR OWN fault, but as a whole overclocking doesn't really hurt anybody.

Keep in mind those who RMA their own damage are usually the ones who don't buy their own software, and generally don't add much to any economy. These types exist outside of the overclocking world as well.

Overclocking does help the chipmakers though. Look at how many users flood to the next 300a that comes out. Look at the rush to get the new king kong of coolers. Or the lord of the motherboards, and how the followers flock to them. Everything that helps the OC community tends to sell well by it's very nature. Problem is that the community is hitting commodity status, where everyone+dog has done some sort of OC, as opposed to the past where it was mostly geeks like me sitting around in their room, reading their motherboard jumper manual (remeber those? :)....and decided to try something after carefully considering the potential costs, and the gains.

Now OCing seems to have also become mainstream enough to have bickering and the usual hodgepodge of unconstructive rants and flames that plague many far less technical discussion boards. Given, I myself participate in some of those boards, but I tend to put my vulgar, usually offensive side behind while I'm trying to talk computers....this is after all, a technical topic, and not a "OMGZ I'm going to pwn your azz in CS today PUNK!!!!" discussion board.

Basically what I'm trying to get down to is maturity...part of being mature is to learn to accept any bad that happens in response to something you do....like if you stick your hand inside hte blade area of a lawnmower....that's YOUR fault...not John Deere's.... Same goes for damaging hardware you overclock...if you OC at all, be a man and take whatever happens, good or bad. I should know, I've fried $400 vidcards, Blown $500 motherboards, and basically made myself sick to the stomach on some of the mishaps I've had during my endless pursuit in this hobby. Did I return a single peice....hell no! What did I do? It's called live on ramen....once oyu get sick of eating crap ramen for every mishap, you learn how NOT to mess things up as often...

It builds character too :p

thanks mustang_steve for clarifying my point

I was more so talking about technology advances (pushing the limit further and further. responding to customers demands) and how people rush to get the newest stuff, not just merely an economical standpoint.

Idunno it just didn't make sense to me why people complain on their overclocks

frankly about a week ago i was scared to death when i put this 2.4c to the test.

I tenatively got it up to 2.8 then to 3.12. however the feeling i got at 2.8 was the same at 3.12,
thankful and scared all at the same time

i know the chip has a lot more in it, but perhaps by the time i actually need a 3.12 or greater i can most likely afford one.
