overclocking barton 2500

This is my first time overclocking so i just have a few questions. Right now my barton is at stock speed and i wanted to overclock it to 2.0ghz@ 200x10. I have dual corsair xms 3200 ram but i do not understand how to do the timings for the memory. I have a 350 watt antec power supply and i wanted to know if that is going to limit me.

Well, I'm not sure you'll be able to hit that speed, since unless it's a barton mobile, the multiplier will be locked at 11. But don't worry, on stock cooling with a barton 2500+ you can usually hit 2.2ghz (200*11) and don't even worry about your memory timings, just leave them stock. Stock speed for pc3200 is 200mhz (400mhz DDR) so you'll be fine.

I actually got my cpu two years ago so i can go higher than 11. Since my fsb now is at 166 isnt my memory running at 333 rather than 400? So i just want to go up to 200x10 to get 400mhz. my memory timings are 2-3-3-6. so i should leave it there or can i change it to make it go faster.

My idle cpu speed is 42 and load at 48 and case at highest is 32.

your psu should be fine if dont have many hard drives

you should also be able to run ur timings at 2-2-2-5 if ur only doing 200FSB X 10. if it doesnt' work out right at 2-2-2-5 with default vdimm then up it one increment at a time

what motherboard do you have?
also, what heatsink.?

if it has an nforce2 chipset you should make that last number 11 or 12 on your ram timings.. ex: 2-3-3-11..

since your cpu is unlocked, try 200x9.. that will work even work for sure.. then raise the multi until you get it wehre you want it.. you should test for stability.. and determine what temps are acceptable to you and such..

baiscally decide the max temp and voltage you will put through your cpu.. probably 1.75 and 50c are good to go with.. then either raise your voltage until your temps reach 50c.. then see how fast you can get the cpu at taht voltage... or maybe your cpu temps will be lower than that.. then you just stop at 1.75..

get it? kinda? you can read around in the forums some more.. about testing for stability, and reading temperatures and such.. or i can write out the basics,, but that would get long.. and it already has been typed numerous times before..

i have an abit nf7-s and a vantec aeroflow heatsink with v2 fan. ( i know its not that good.)
I was wonderinh why my timing was 11 and not 5 or 6. So i will change that back to 11.

I just want to get my memory run at 400mhz (3200) and my cpu at 2 or higher depending on the stability.

I am going to increase it slowly and try different fsb and ratio.

I think i messed up bad. I highered the fsb and change the ram timings and the computer wouldnt start. So i restarted and changed it back to regular settings and for some reason windows doent boot up. It just restarts when it tries to load up windows? did i corrupt my hard drive?

Clear the cmos and start over. That seems to work a lot of the time.

i cleared cmos and rebooted and it did not work. damn. so what can i do next?

strange, doubt if you fried the chip. I have my unlocked at 2.3 (highest i hit was 2.4) with 3200 ram at 400fsb. so you should get atleast 2.2. maybe shut off your pc for a bit.

will i have to reformat my hard drive or is there a chance i permantly lost a part?

Try clearing CMOS again, I've done this as well. If clearing CMOS doesnt work, try putting your ram in a different DIMM spot? Pull the battery out of the Motherboard for at least 15 seconds. I'm really sure you did not damage anything, your mobo just doesnt like the current configuration.

does it get to the "starting windows" screen? or does it not read the hard drive at all..

at worst i think you just corrupted your windows install.. remember how easy that was in the win9x days?? anyways. .you can do a repair install.. i bet that will fix it..

when you do overclock download prime95 and run it.. this tests if your comptuer can do math right or is "stable" if it isn't.. it can't do math, corrupts data slowly.. and eventually you get what happened...

what version of windows do yo have? XP?

If you ever get it to work again put your timings at stock, voltage at stock, and set the multiplier at 10 with a FSB of 200 (400DDR). That should put you nicely at 2GHz.

i will but should i do it slowly? as in go up to 170x10. and then 173,176, etc.. because i think i made a big mistake when went from 166x11 straight to 200x9. I am not sure if that is when it exactly messed up but it didnt start.

also when i tried 175x11 it wasnt very stable. Madden 2004 went to desktop after a quarter of playing.

is my cpu or motherboard not stable or what?

i was wondering, can i use a windows xp with service pack 2 to repair when i originally had only service pack 1 installed?

depending on your motherboard type. just set it to 200mhz FSB and make sure the RAM is set to that same speed, don't bother with timings.

how cna i make sure my ram is at the same speed. Dont they both go together. 200fsb is 400 mhz ram

you can set a ram divider.. but it actually makes your comptuer run slower.. your ram will probably run the same speed as your fsb.. just make sure it is..

also.. you don't have to go slowly in regards to the fsb.. especially when your cpu clock speed isn't changing at all.. 200x9 should work perfectly..

as far as repairing windows.. when you say reapair with sp2, do you mean reinstall? there is a way to repair.. and i don't know how it works.. haha. it is in the windows setup when you boot from the cd.. but i couldn't figuer it out..and am from the old school that you have to reformat every 6 months anyways... but using the version with sp2 should be fine..

so to start.. stry 2-3-3-11.. 200 fsb.. and multi of 9.. stock voltage.. then you should be able to get it to 10 x 200 on stock volts.. but run prime95 to make sure it is stable..if your temps are acceptable at 11 x 200 with a little more voltage then go for it..

also your compouter might be wierd and not like 200 for some reason. but 198 or 203 or something will be just fine..

good lucks

okay i tried a repair and it did not work. First i tried copy and some command that i dont remmember now and that did not work.

second, i tried bootcfg command and it said it cant do it becuase of errors.

then i did chdsk and at 50% it said there were more than 1 or 2 errors and did not repair it.

I also do not get the repair install option on the xp cd.

So am i basically screwed? do i have to do a fresh install?

ask how to do a repair intall in the OS forum.. or just install a fresh version on top of the old one without doing a reformat and you will probably retain most of your old settings..

first of all i tried to install xp and it did not work. So i downloaded the western digital utility and did a test. On the test it had errors and it said to call technical support.

then i tried write zero, which is full deletion and that got errors as well . i had erros 0108 and 0112 on first and second try. It did not completly delete it.

So what do i do. did my hard drive totally mess up? what is the problem?

update: i started it again to do another test and it says now that there is no hard drive!!

is my hard drive dead? anything i can do?

if you have a spare hard drive, try that in the system you're testing, likewise, if you have another system, try the messed up hard drive in that.

is there a chance my motherboard messed up agian too? i just had to buy the same mobo a week ago. I will try it on another computer but i do not know if i have enough power. also it is a 4 year old dell so i dont know if its wise to do that.

your dell should be fine if you're just putting in an extra hard drive to test it out. you could also try clearing your cmos/taking out the battery and putting it back in like someone else suggested if you think it's the mobo.

the only thing is will my hard drive corrupt my dell hard drive when i put it in?

i think my power supply is 250 watts for a dell. i guess i am gonna try it.

you can either add it in addition to the other drive (set it as "slave"), or, if you are really concerned, you can unplug power and ide cable to the other hd, and just use the one that you're testing. your dell hd should be fine with the other drive in there, someone correct me if i am wrong though...
