Overclocking athlon 2600xp

I have a gigabyte ga-7vax and an athlon 2600xp t-bred 333mhz and 1gig pc-2700. I want to overclock my cpu. In my bios I have these options. cpu over voltage control, auto, +5%, +7.5%, and +10%. Agp over voltage control +0.1v, +0.2v, +0.3v. The ram has the same options as the agp. Do I need to just raise the cpu? How much? Do I have to raise the ram setting too? Or can I only overclock the cpu? I don't want to overclock my video card. I just want to get a little more out of my cpu. What kind of increase can I see and what kind of cooling do I need? Right now I'm at 2.09 ghz

My athlon xp rig is in my signature. Recently i have become interested in pushing a little more performance out of my 2600 barton. Although I don't remember how it is for thouroughbreds, my proc is superlocked - it has a protective coat over the bridges and obviously isn't unlocked otherwise. so for me, the options I do have are adding voltage, and increasing the frontside bus. obviously that's what i'm doing. with gigabyte motherboards, they have a neat tool called EasyTune5, which is a GUI based windows application that lays it all out for you, (use advanced mode) and lets you adjust things via software.

First off, you definitely need good cooling. Here's an interesting guide to AMD thermals which basically says keep it below 55C. When i was using my stock HSF with Arctic Silver, on full load, i was definitely hitting just below 55C, and that escalated to 57 to 59 when i started pushing it a little. I got a volcano 7 (it's supposed to be a 12+, but he sent me wrong one, now waiting on 12 still) and it does a LOT better than the stock HSF, even though its rated only to an xp1800+. (now i'm OC'd higher, with slightly higher voltage @51C full 24hour load).

As I am to understand it, AMD rates their processors conservatively on voltage, so for the first few megahertz increase (on fsb), everything runs well. Ya push it a little, you hesitate, maybe run some burn in tests, great. but after a certain point, the cpu just can't push out those cycles without adding some voltage. And here, is where your heat is really gonna start coming into play, i think. To continue getting more out of your processor, and not having windows restart / lock up / not boot etc., you need to up your voltage a little bit before continuuing to higher speeds.

Nextly, i have Corsair PC3200 ram. It's not the highest end stuff, but still a great company for high quality chips. Anyhoo, my ram is rated to 400 (200 ddr) mhz frontside bus, and as i'm starting off at 333 (166 ddr) so I'm not worried about it being able to handle the higher speed.

However, this is where I have started running into issues. Ram timings are definitely important to stability. So as the speed increases, be sure to relax your timings accordingly. I was able to get a few more mhz added to my fsb after relaxing my timings. But now that I have hit 180 fsb, I am once again stuck. This time, I am not sure what to do next, as i am running 200 fsb timings at 180, which leads me to think there is something elsewhere to tweak to continue my OC. And hopefully i can get that Volcano 12+ from DigitalWanksta shipped soon, cuz i am not sure i want to put more voltage to my cpu without keeping temp at or below 50. As you would read in that link i provided, OC'd processors have falling Error Free Temps.

So, if anyone has any advice to me on how to continue getting more out of my proc, please feel free to tell me. also feel free to correct anything i might have wrong here, i am simply trying to share what i think i know to be right.

edit: did they actually make thoroughbreds with 333 fsb's? i thought they were 266.. prolly wrong though. nextly, yes you will be able to overclock your ram and proc at the same time by upping the fsb, but with pc2700, you will actually be overclocking the ram, which will be another possible point of failure / limiting factor because now you have to worry about the ram running over its spec, not just the proc. (only as fast as the slowest part)
