Overclocking and the effects on games

So I gots this comp. Lets take the two main components...2.4 P4 Prescott and 512mb PC3700 OCZ Gold Rev.2. On a MSI PT880 Neo-LSR. I set the bios to do a DDR333 ratio. So we have the Proc at 2.9 and the Ram at DDR400 speed. Yeah it can handle more but this is just an example. Anyway. I get it running. Run Prime95 for stability checks. Runs great with the Blend test for an hour. Start up UT2k4 and it freezes just after the splash screen. Halo crashes after like...30 mins of playing. It seems neither one likes the overclock. Now if I run things at stock speed, they run fine. I don't get it. If the comp is stable enough why wont the games run properly? I bought this comp to overclock and tweak, yet I find I can't run games I wanna play but I can do everything else just fine. Sigh. And I know the memory isn't bad. 100% sure. Vid card is a 9600 pro.
 
I ran it for an hour. One hour is usually enough to test for stability to run games after an overclock. I know I should run it for like a whole day for the ultimate test but I don't need my room to be a super hot place in the house. ahah I ran Memtest a few months ago and nothing was wrong. I'm 100% sure the memory is still good cuz nothing has really happened to it since.
 
Run the in place large ffts torture test instead, the blend tends to not find / take longer to find a problem.
 
What voltage is your ram at?
I did some tweaking on my system and the ram voltage got set to Auto, which for mine is 2.7 volts. I tried starting CS:S and the splash screen froze. Rebooted, set the voltage to 2.8, and everything was fine.
 
Its at 2.8. Have to set it at that or i can't run the 2.5-3-3-7 timings for the ram. 2.85 it wont POST at all. But right now it seems no matter I do with it, its not running stable. I dunno what happened. I guess I should set that to auto and then the timings back to SPD. Guess I can't overclock.
 
Reset the BIOS and attempted another overclock, this time using the CoreCenter utility. I managed to bump it up to 147 fsb. So its been running Prime95 now for about 2 hours at 2.65 GHz. I still have a feeling its not gonna run UT2k4. I'm gonna let it run for another hour then try UT again. And hopefully it will run, otherwise I'll just be dumbfounded. Is there any other stress-test utilities that might crash this machine and tell me something Prime95 won't?
 
Your ram may be ok but still not set right. Try 2.5, 3, 3, 8 and see what happens. Also try setting the timings to their slowest settings. (eg: 3, 4, 4, 8 or whatever your BIOS allows).

If that's not it, what about other possibilities such as AGP bus speed? Is it locked at 66?

If its only freezing in games, what about stress testing it with 3dmark 03 / 05 or Aquamark several times in a row?
