I did the best I could do with my cooling for overclocking and I am still not happy
Q6600 G0 lapped> AS5> lapped Tuniq tower 120
p182 with 6 fans

stock settings 33-34c IDLE 50-53 LOAD

My oc at 3.4ghz 1.32 voltage nb 1.450
ambient temp 31c

idle 43 and 70 load
prime 95 25.5 small ffts

When I played crysis for a good 15 minutes it never rarely went higher than 60c

Should this overclock be fine, as crysis will probably be the most demanding program I will ever run?
Will idling at the temperature damage my cpu? I leave my comp on 24/7

So long as the ambient temperature isn't looking to rise much on you ever, you should be fine. Though personally I would prefer lower. Temps seem a little high for your set up though from the general results I've seen around? Might there be issues with mounting or thermal past application? Possibly too much positive or negative pressure in the case?

When you say ambient temp, do you really mean ambient or reported temp inside the case by the motherboard?
If your ambient is really 31C, the temps arent too bad.

I'd use Coretemp to monitor temps and use the setting "Show delta to Tj max"
This way you know how far you have to go which is more useful.

Idling at that temp cannot harm anything btw :)

So I placed a fan now under the Tuniq tower laying on my video card, and another fan blowing air on the video card.

New Idle temps are
42-39-38-38

New Load temps are
70-70-62-62

Prime 95 25.5 20 minutes small ffts

Now my 3rd and 4th cores are lower but the first two stay the same.
The fans also helped bring my 8800GT to 37c which was the orginal temperature with the CPU at stock. My idle temps are almost at close to stock temps had.

My ambient temp being reported in the case by the motherboard is in the 30s 31-34c.

I reseated my heatsink and applied the paste many times, and doesn't seem to be a problem with it.

How does the TJ max going to help me? It says I have 50c more for the full max.

Real time gaming temps 56-54-50-49
Crysis 30 minutes

As I write this I am working on 3.4ghz@1.43v and it has been stable for 30min. I am going to lower the voltage once it stays stable for at least an hour. Load temps are at 68c for cores 1&2 and 59c for cores 3&4. My idle temps are around 30c after being idle for over 15 minutes, not fresh start.

I haven't missed with any of the other voltages yet beside core voltage.

To Kr1z,
Tjmax is the high temperature at which the CPU will start to self throttle.
If you subtract 15C off it for safetys sake (ie stop at delta Tj = 15), thats the max temp to run your chip if you are going nutso with it (not recommended for 24/7 on air).
Your own overclock is unlikely to get to that temp unless you use a lot of voltage (once the heat issue is sorted).

Your excess heat problem may be due to the base of the heatsink and the cpu cap not mating together well.
There have been quite a few others with the same issue who have lapped the cpu and/or the heatsink base to get them to make better contact.

You can check how bad it is by holding a rulers edge against the heatsink base and against the cpu cap to see how much they deviate from exactly flat.
If it deviates a lot, you might want to read some threads on lapping.
