Overclocking and power saving -- what's possible?

I just got a Gigabyte 55A-UD3 Mobo + i7 860.

I want to OC it, at least modestly (aircooled, Hyper 212). What is a realistic OC?

I also want to have power saving, however.

What power saving features, if any, are available when OCing?

(I have not seriously OCed a CPU since Athlon XP days).

You should be able to hit 3.8GHz easily, and you have a decent chance of hitting 4GHz. As for power savings, just leave C1E and Speedstep enabled when you overclock and they will work. You won't have the voltage decrease ability, but your CPU should lower its speed when idle which will save a bit of power.

Yeah, seriously, just about all of the Intel built-in hardware level power saving features work fine when you overclock. On my Q6600 for example speedstep actually brings it down to it's stock speed of 2.4Ghz when it's idle.

Running 4.0Ghz with C1E and Speedstep enabled. No issues and idle temps quite low. Def. a +. :)
