Overclocking an x1900xtx?

My system:

A64 x2 3800+ @ 2.5Ghz
Mushkin 2x1GB DDR500
MSI x1900xtx @ stock - runs 72-78C under load
Windows XP sp2, Catalyst 6.10

I'm looking for advice on the following:

1. is it worth trying to OC my video card with the (stock) MSI cooler? That is, can i expect to see a tangible increase in performance to make it worth the extra heat/risk?
2. and if so, what's the safest way to go about it?
 
What are your idle/load temps with the stock cooler (currently)?

And is there a NEED to overclock, or are you just seeing how far it can go?
 
I couldn't overclock mine, with the stock ATI cooler, at all.
 
i'll check out the temps once i get home... and no, there's no "need" to overclock... but i certainly wouldn't mind giving my system a decent fps boost in the heavy-weight games i play (oblivion, FEAR), provided it can be done safely.
 
mine is on water (MCW60) and apparently my limit on the core is at ~710. pretty sad imho.

what about the memory? and is a 60Mhz OC at all worthwhile?
 
I have both a X1900XTX and a X1900 Crossfire Ed.


Both are OCed to 710mhz gpu and 805mhz mem. in 3d mode.

I installed each card in my system by themself. used ATiWinflash to do a BIOS dump of each card and used RabiT to re-tweak the BIOS, then reflashed each card with their new tweaked BIOS.



so in 2D, the cards stay as 500/600. then in 3D they both go 710/805 in crossfire mode @100% fan on both cards. Temps stay at around 60-65*c under load with stock coolers on them. fan noise doesn't bother me one bit. If I DIDN'T hear the fans I would worry. :D
 
who is the manufacturer of your card that the stock coolers keep two of them 60-65C under load with such an OC???
 
The issue with these cards is heat

you really dont want to be pushing your card over 70C with the stock cooler, is just hot.

the XTX is a Sapphire and the X1900 Crossfire Ed. is an ASUS EAX.

I'm also using a full server tower with MANY 80mm fans. I have very good air flow. ambient case temps hover around 36*C

60mhz isnt all that bad...but on water, it should be able to do more, so it's relative :)

really? i mean, for a CPU that's obv. way too hot, but i thought video cards could get to ~90C before you had to worry?
