Overclocking an i5-750

I'm going to move to a 460SLi setup and one thing that's been recommended to me is to overclock my CPU as there will be more overhead involved in a multi-GPU setup. 3.6 GHz was suggested to me. My RAM is PC1600 Gskill ram

Firstly, should I be able to do a 20x1800 comfortably?

Secondly, I just have stock cooling right now which has suited me just fine, but I know I need a new one for OCing. Any recommendations? Venomous-X, Cogage, etc.?

I'd love to get an H50...but I'm unsure how it could possibly be mounted in my case (see sig). And I'm not much of a case modder.

Thanks for the link. My case does not have a top fan but rather your typical exhaust fan on the back of the case near the CPU. Would the best set up for one of these fans be to place it on the side closest to the case fan, and have it push hot air away from the fins (as opposed to pulling air through the fins)? Make sense?
 
I got me the same CPU and I'm using H50 - too bad you could not use this.

My CPU's overclocked to 4.0Ghz :D and it loads at 70-71c
 
Many air coolers will fit over the top of ripjaw ram. I'm running an i5-750 at 4.0GHz using a Megahalems and it floats at about 65 to 67C at load. It easily clears my 4x2gb sticks of G-Skill Ripjaws (Running a P55A-UD3).

Ripjaws aren't very tall, its the Tridents and PI series that cause problems.

Mine is oriented on the bottom, facing the videocard. There's a 120mm exhaust below and off to the side of that area, but that's about it. If your case has good airflow, then you're likely only gaining inches instead of miles when it comes to orienting the fan one way or the other.
 
You don't have to do any modding to install an H50. You just remove the rear 120mm fan, then mount the H50 radiator and fan over that slot, mount it to your cpu and you're done. The reason the H50 is advantageous in your situation is because it's a low profile cooler that doesn't care how high your ram is. When you deal with an aircooler like the Megahalems or the TRUE-120, you have a real chance of blocking ram slots depending on the height of the ram and how the cpu socket on your motherboard has been designed.

But don't you lose any sort of exhaust then? My case has only one exhaust fan (120 mm).
 
I hit 65c at absolute max with my nh-u12P se2.

I'd recommend it, but better value can be had elsewhere
 
I have the same ram that you do and it's pretty great. I haven't tried to push it farther over 1600 but I have my i5-750 clocked at 3.8ghz with a modest voltage increase. Go H50 for the cooler.

I can pretty safely say the Megahalems and probably most tower air coolers will happily fit over the top or next to his ram. I have the UD3 version and he has the UD4 and looking at pictures the ram positioning is the same, and I can and do easily use all 4 slots with ripjaw ram. My fan sits just above the 4th DIMM slot, but sits high enough that I can fit the ripjaws under it.

The only way you'll run into mounting problems is if you have a cooler with a very low clearance which sits wider than the standard 1156 pin mounting holes... which the megahalems doesn't. Even if it does hover over the DIMM slots like the D14, most coolers will still clear the ripjaws. Check this video...

The D14 has 44mm of clearance (according to Noctua's site) and you can see there's still plenty of space between it and the ram.

My i5 750 really doesn't like 4GHz. I can get it there and temperatures are fine with my Megahalems, but to go from 3.8GHz to 4GHz requires so much more voltage that it really doesn't seem worth it. If your CPU can't reach 4GHz happily, a H50 probably wont help, the Megahalems has shown to be equal or better than the H50.
 
Damn. Some of you have really good chips. My i5 is a lazy fat ass. I can only get 4.0 stable with 1.4Vcore and 1.4 VTT.

The H50 is right on the edge of cooling this chip. Anymore than 1.4v and I'd say you might as well build a full water cooler.

1.4 VTT is sounds really high, but my i5 750 needs almost 1.4 Vcore to be stable at 4GHz as well, the megahalems keeps it cool no worries even at 1.4V and 4GHz (prime95 temperatures 66-68C with an ambient temp of about 22-24C).
 
I got a lapped H50 from [H] and did 500 runs of IntelBurn with 20x180, 1.25 vcore (in the bios) and only had ONE inconsistency, which was the last calculation. Do you think I should up he vcore a bit and try again or am I probably good?

My load temps looked good, never got above 67C.
 
If you suceeded in completing whopping 499 IBT calculations, then you're very unlikely to crash in "real-life" applications. My suggestion would be to leave everything as it is.
 
Awesome! This was the easiest overclocked I've ever had, by far. These chips are beastly.
 
That's true. This chip gave me the easiest and most efficient overclocking of all I have ever had, too! :)
