??? Overclocking an ATI9600 XT

I'm just messing with overclocking my video card. I'm just using Clockgen to see what I can do with it. Right now, I've gotten it to about 89.5Mhz(according to clockgen). Is this a good OC and how far should I try to go?
 
Uhh... I thought ClockGen was just used to overclock motherboards. What exactly are you overclocking? A good tool for overclocking a 9600XT is ATITool. But usually there's not that far you can go with most 9600XTs without overheating them since they are usually pretty close to "the wall" already.

If thats your AGP bus, yes, terrible move. Put it back to 66 or wherever it was.

Use ATITool to OC your card.
 
I am getting this error message though when I run 3D05-

Is my video card the cause of that? I'm getting it when I go to 1024X768 resolution. I don't get it when I'm at 848X480.
Go easy on me boys. I just had some spare time on my hands and started messing with Clockgen.
BTW, set the AGP back to 67. My 3D05 score seemed pretty lame(1161) so I just started messing with it.
 
I'm not seeing your error message.

I score a 1780 on '05 with my 9600Pro. If you have an nForce 2 motherboard, you need to make sure the GART drivers are installed. For the video card, update your drivers to the latest Catalysts (5.4). With the new drivers go to the SMARTGART settings and move AGP frequency to 4x and fastwrites ON. Restart, yada yada. Now test it out it.

Messing with that AGP thing could have really screwed you over, fortunately it doesnt appear as if it did.
 
Whew, I didn't know I could screw it up! My board is Nforce3 chipset. I downloaded that ATI tool and will give it a shot. Don't really want to mess with it too much. Like I said, I just had some spare time on my hands. Thanks for all the input.
 
i like using radclocker. it gives my 9600pro a few more mhz than atitool. and atitool takes a LOoOOoOong time..

Yeah, I just tried it a few days ago and I almost thought the program had locked up. It was taking forever........
 
forever to do what? if to find Max mem/core, then it should take some time. i use manually. just go up by 5.

Yes, I ran the Max core portion. I was just gonna try manually seeing as how it was taking so long. What is a good indication of when I'm reaching the max? Reboots? Bad video?
 
you should just let it run all night. a good indication that it's good is when it says "no errors for..." and then probably at least an hour (actually I dont really know how long, but the longer the better). Probably for at least as long as you plan on gaming for.
 
when you go too high, your comp will reboot, or you can get blue screen. also turn on temps so you can see if its running hot
 
am i special case? when i do it, it'll start running the frequencies up and then eventually it'll find errors when it gets to high, and it'll slowly start bring the core or mem clocks back down until its stable, and it tells you how long its been stable for.

maybe i'll try running it tonight tonight to see what happens.
