Overclocking AMD X2 4400+

I've been having issues overclocking my AMD X2 4400+. I've been able to get it to 2.5 GHZ on stock air cooling with great temperatures. The only problem is that it OC's my memory to about 227MHZ and then I start getting errors when I try to run memtest. I currently have two gigs of Geil PC3200 DDR400 and I was wondering if there is any way to solve these errors without buying new ram. Keep in mind that I haven't change any voltages yet. By the way, is this ram ok for overclocking with my setup?

I'm not a total n00b at overclocking, but at the same time, I'm definitely not a pro. :)

you need to enable a memory divider in the bios so that 227 will only be >200 on the memory.

look for 180mhz or a fraction to tell you what the divider is.

Sorry for acting so n00bish but I headed into the BIOs and couldn't find a setting for a "memory divider." I found all of my memory settings but nothing about a memory divider. I did find a couple other settings, it gave me the options of running at 166 or 200 mhz. Do I have to change it to run at 166 to solve this?

I currently have an Asus A8n SLI Deluxe motherboard if that would help any.

And I also took a couple screenshots of CPU-Z for you to look at:

Also, If I try to go higher than 2.5 my computer locks up. How would I solve this? By increasing voltage?

Now just making sure but that won't cause a perfomance decrease once I overclock, correct?

And since I keep locking up when I try to go above 2.5GHZ would it be wise for me to increase the voltage? I mean you aren't using the default voltage of 1.3 on yours, are you?

why run a divider? try relaxing the timings a bit. what are the rated timings on those things? if they are rated for 2-2-2 try relaxing the 2.5-2-2 and work your way from there
also, increasing the voltage does increase stability for ur cpu OC but make sure u dont go too far :p
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=888001
follow that guide, best thing that has helped me OC my rig (see sig)

edit:
ah, just saw ur timings...2.5-4-4...maybe try running @ 3-3-3? i know that ballistix tracers are rated at 3-4-4 but they can run at tighter timings...also, u might want to increase the dRAM voltage in your bios (the RAM voltage) but again, dont go so far that u fry it :p
one more time, eclipse's guide has been great, u shud definitely check it out if you havent done so yet

3-3-3, won't make it slower, correct?

I'm going to try to oc it again in a few minutes and see if that solves anything. And thanks for the guide man, it should be alot easier now! :)

no problem man!
and thats right, 3-3-3 should make it a bit faster and give u more latency
from what ive heard, the difference between 2.5 and 3 for cl (the first number) isnt very big but making the other timings tighter should be better
gl!

ive been wondering myself, my prime is stable for 240x11 mhz, while my OCZ platinum 2gb 2-3-2-5 is at 203 megahertz on a 9/10 divider... i start getting memory blue screens.. :(.. do i need to loosen my timings or something

Ok, I got my memory to 3-3-3 and it was stable on memtest for three hours, before I closed the test. You know I probably should have mentioned this earlier but I am currently using the stock heatsink. Hopefully that won't cause any problems. At stock my idle temperature is 35 degrees and under load it hits about 45 degrees celcius.

UGH!

Now, I'm having trouble just getting it to run at 2.4 with 3-3-3 for my memory timings. The only way I can get it to even boot up at 2.4 is to change my memory speed to DDR333. Whenever I try running it at stock (DDR400), it won't even boot up. And I really don't want to keep it at DDR333, it makes my memory run at 172MHZ.

What am I doing wrong?

Here's some updated screenshots of CPU-Z:

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated....... :)

*EDIT: I cannot find anything about a memory divider in my BIOS. I'm using an ASUS A8n SLI-Deluxe if that helps any.

Any help?

I've been messing with it for the last couple of hours and can't find any way to get my memory back up to 200MHZ while being able to keep my CPU at 2400MHZ.

My motherboard doesn't have any options for memory dividers. It just gives me a couple of options, "DDR333 and DDR400." When I try running at DDR400, with my CPU at 2400MHZ, it won't even boot. When I try to run DDR333, it will boot but my memory speed is only 172MHZ. Is there any way to solve this, I know it can be done.

Thank You :)

in your multiplier, change it to 10, set FSB at 240 (you could go even higher), and set your memory frequency to 366mhz. In ntune you should see your memory frequency around 425 or somethin'

Uggg... I didn't know that the ASUS A8N only had those dividers (is there a newer BIOS for that system that has more dividers?)... that's going to limit your overclock if your memory is weak.

eClipse's guide is a good reference. another one you may want to try is the "definitive A64 overclocking guide" on dfi-street.com.

http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28049

This thread will allow you to download the guide in pdf format (zip or rar versions)

Although you may not own a dfi product and some of the BIOS settings may not apply, the general information there is VERY helpful.

One important lesson you will learn from that guide... CPU speed is KING in the A64 world... meaning tight timings and running 1:1 (ram/cpu) wasn't as important as getting the MAX CPU speed. Before I read that guide I wouldn't buy ANYTHING except Mushkin CAS 2 rated memory (even before PC-100 days), but after reading that guide and applying it to my systems... I've changed my perspective.
Enjoy reading.... and learning ;)
Good Luck

huh...now I'm having an issue with MY system. I can't set the DRAM frequency to anything but "auto" in the bios. Otherwise, the system doesn't even try to boot. Doesn't get to post, nothing ever appears on the monitor. And I have to go and reset my CMOS when this happens so it's kind of a pain. Running right now at stock speeds with everything but ram is only 100mhz x2 in CPU ID now...so half of what it should be.

I did just install a new hard drive last night but uninstalled the hard drive..then this all started happening. I tried to put the HD back in to see if it would help but it didn't. ...
