i have a ECS k7sem v1.0 mobo and an AMD Duron 700mhz w/ 200fsb. Would it be worth is to change my FSB from 200mhz to 266mhz? because i want to get it a little faster. but how much would it hurt it or shorten the life of my processor. I have a decent sized heatsink and my fan kicks very fast. would it screw anything up. also i have 320mb of ram. if i do overclock it, will i really see a difference or should i just leave it the way it is.

From what I remember, the K7SEM is lacking the following in its' BIOS:

1. 1 MHz intervals for FSB
2. Memory timings
3. Core voltage
4. Memory voltage
5. AGP/PCI locks.

If you try and boost the FSB to 133 (266 DDR), chances are that the system will not POST, and you will have to dig around for that lovely CMOS CLR jumper. Also if you did try to boot at 266 FSB, you'd be asking the PCI BUS to work at 44.3x MHz which would cause your hard drive to lose or corrupt data, and cause your sound card or any other PCI device to malfunction.

You can try 110 FSB first if it's an option and go from there. I promise you though that overclocking will be next to nil on that board.

That ThinkCentre is a pretty cool looking PC. Of the two you linked to, I would go for that one. It's cheaper, it's a IBM, but, it has only a CD-ROM, smaller HD, and it's used.

But, the king of good deals on cheap PC's is Dell. Have you looked there yet?

honostly no because my cousin had a dell and we had to replace a ribbon cable and it didnt detect the hard drive, and it was a brand new ribbon cable. so he ordered a ribbon cable straight from dell and worked fine. so we knew that we had to buy strictly from dell. so they kind of pushed me further away from them.

If you want reliabiltity and ease of service, go with the M51 ThinkCentre. I know that they are made by Lenovo, but I was impressed with how easy it was to service these machines compared to some of Dells' I have encountered. My previous employer ordered close to 20 of the M51's and they are a very solid machine.

That was because the cable was a "cable select" cable. Lot's of OEM's use them, that way they just have to set all the drive jumpers to cable select instead of master or slave and then the position on the cable determines master or slave. You could have just changed the jumpers instead of buying the second cable.

I would snag the ThinkCentre then. Check out the pictures, its a real nice tooless BTX chassis. Can't beat it for the price they are offering it for.
