I want to overclock my amd 3500+ just to get me by until I can get my new cpu. Should I lap it, and get new thermal paste?

What program would I use, I don't want to overclock hard. Just want to get a feel for overclocking because when I upgrade I plan on going intel with a e7200 which I heard is a good OCer.

Lapping isnt necessary unless you want to go for the max.
What are your current machine specs?

If you have a decent cooler and case airflow, you should be able to do well.
Start by finding the max FSB (HTT) the motherboard can do, then the memory.

First set the HT multiplier to x3 so the HTT bus does not exceed specification.

1) FSB (HTT)
Set the CPU multiplier and memory speeds to a slow speed and clock the FSB up.
Test using Orthos in windows.
When Orthos starts to fail, you have found the limit of your motherboards FSB.

2) Memory
Clock the FSB back to normal and set your memory speeds back to normal.
Increase the FSB and run Orthos in windows.
If you reach the max FSB of the motherboard, reduce the FSB and increase the speed of the memory.
Rinse and repeat until Orthos fails.

3) CPU
Once you know the limits of your memory and FSB, if you overclock the CPU and it fails within those limits, you know it is down to the CPU.
Clock away and test with Orthos.
When Orthos fails, you are close to your max CPU speed.
