overclocking a 2600K help

finally decided to do a new build and upgrade from my Q9550. I realize that OCing the 2600K is totally different than the 775 socket CPUs. is there an idiots guide to overclocking an I7 somewhere?
 
buy a good cooler, the stock cooler sucks and will really hamper your overclocking.

1. dont touch the blck, disable C1E (unless your on a asus)
2. adjust the multiplier and test for stability (linx or prime) until you found the limit (most will 4.5-4.7)
3. enable cpu overvoltage
4. crank the multiplier higher
5. add cpu voltage if you hit a wall (max will depend on cooling) stay under 1.5v if you cooling can handle this much. each chip is different. anything over 1.4 is pushing it with air cooling but your temps will tell you.
 
What about memory? I bought some cheapo Kingston 8gb DDR3 and it's rated at 1.65v at DDR3-1600 and 1.5v at DDR3-1333. I realize it's not ideal, but I did get it for $20 AR.

I know 1.65v is a bit high for Sandy Bridge. Should I run it at DDR3-1333 then and not worry about it?

yes, run it at 1.5v. sandy scales very poorly with memory deviders. when bit-tech tested 1333 vs 1600 the gains were .5pfs to 2 fps when gaming withe the faster memry compared to a sloightly faster encode with the slower memory when both were run at the same timings. nothing you will notice when running your machine. 1.65v is the max limit the cpu can handle, that leaves very little room for error and overvoltage from your mobo.

intel has said to run 1.5v, run that

Good to know. I put in my 2600k and z68 board (took advantage of $80 off Microcenter deal!) last night and the Gigabyte bios defaulted to 1.5V for my Kingston memory.
