what can i overclock my 8800GTS 640mb EVGA generally ?
and what type of cooling would i need to get
i want to get GTX speeds

would i need to get any certain type of aftermarket cooling

and are these things usually good for this type of oc ?

I'm running 648 core/900 mem (ATiTool check). It can go much higher but it starts to artifact too much (imo) after 670+/1000+. I used to run 648/1000, but ATiTool said noooooooo in a whiny voice.

Even if you get to GTX clocks, it still will not be GTX performance. You would have to clock things significantly higher to make up for the missing shaders, and pipelines.

well im a complete first timer when it comes to overclocking but using rivatuner and ati tool to test, i managed on stock cooling 684 core and 1026 mem with max temps of about 68C with stock cooling

what ive read most gts card should easy hit min 100mhz on both core and memory.

nice OC! i'm very happy with mine @ 684/972. and like it's been said...GTS will never equate to GTX. It would take a massive (read: impossible) OC on core, mem, and shaders to do so.

what kinda performance do you get from an oc ?
is it worth it ?

yes it is. i gained about 3000 points in 3DMark06. real world i gained about 10fps average in MOH:A (from mid 40's to mid 50's) which was VERY noticeble. I didn't test other games, but most all had a noticeble improvement. The downside is it's *said* to lower the life expectancy of the card. With the way gpu upgrade cycles have been the last few years...i'm not too worried about that.

It's been years since I used ATiTool and I just tried to 'find max core'...
Watching it reach 680...690... had my finger on abort just in case...700... clicked abort...710...724... trying to click abort, or close or anything franticly...

I couldn't click abort... I saw a little yellow artifact so I reset my PC.
I don't remember it working that way before...

I should just leave well enough alone...lol

Hi, Im want a 8800GTS 640Mb and have a little question, on TG you can get the XFX in 3 different versions... the Stock, Extreme and XXX.... from I can see they are all the same hard but OCed differentyl right?

Should I save $30 and get the stock version and OC it myself??

Well this really depends on what version of the core you get. If you get an A1 core you'll prob max out @ around 600/950ish. A2 core should get you 620/1025ish and A3 core should get you 650-670/1075-1100ish. Right now I have my A3 EVGA 8800gts set @ 670/1100 artifact free in ati tool with highest temps reaching 72ish (I could make it better but I am lazy :p).

Thanks for the reply JM001!

How could I know before buying it if it has the A1, A2 or A3 core??

if you can oc your GTS to 860mhz core, 1512mhz shader, and 2500mhz memory, you will have same performance as someone with a slightly oc GTX.

Aka, you aren't going to be able to match a GTX :p

Most GTS's do OC very nicely though for about a 10fps gain with all eye candy.

wow it turns out my A3s a guddun my 684/1026 is pretty good considering i only get a max 68C and it seems most peoples cards dont go that high (hmm maybe it has something to do with my 250mm sidefan pumping cooling into it..)

Spend the extra money, the OC'ed editions are warrantied at that speed, and sometimes come with better coolers as well.

Well there really isn't a way to tell before hand, the only way to tell is using rivatuner. But I got my gts from newegg. I bought the evga one and a lot of the evga 8800gts are A3 cores. Whats even more awesome is that the one I bought was advertised at 500/800 but came default at 575/875. So if your looking for the best bet for A3 go for the evga look for it on newegg here: Linky.

It's an awesome price and performs very, very well. You won't be disappointed and with proper cooling you may even be able to reach 700/1115 on it (I have seen a few do it on AIR with great temps).

spending so much on a 640mb GTS when a 2900 pro can easily reach XT clocks and costs around $265 doesnt seem worth it. infact buying a 640 GTS for more than $300 is a waste imo. though here is a cheaper alternative: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127280 , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814186016&Tpk=N82E16814186016

This thread is about overclocking, not about what to buy. Plus who buys AMD anymore?

Edit: last question = joke

Well actually your right.... if it weren't for the fact that the op isn't necessarily looking for the cheapest card nor is looking for a ati card.

Now bear in mind I do think that the 2900's are actually decent cards for the money, I actually recommended it to a buddy because he is looking at a new system for not too much (and I usually prefer nVidia).

Also ultimately the 8800's have usually beat the 2900 on a lot of game benchmarks. But for sub $300 and a card that performs not too far from the 8800's it isn't really that bad at all.

But anyway... yeah. Please read titles and try to reply to subjects that are relevant to the matter at hand.

if one of you even had half a brain u should have noticed I was obviously responding to the post above mine, in which poster himself derails from the OP question (which is fine) and posts a link to newegg regarding what to buy.

As always YMMV.Every chip has different tolerances. My card will do about 580/1350/1970 before artifacting, this with a fan and the stock cooler. With no fan and a Tr HR-03+ on it,and a little IC D7,its sitting as it is (check sig)

Idles around 59 to 65 depending on ambient with extreme temp loads op to and around 91+c after a few hours of Bioshock DX9 maxxed @ 1920x1200 with 2x AA and 4x AF.
Crysis has boosted that to 92c max after two hours.Farcry never goes above 80c.

Rivatuner 2.05 really made my temps go through the roof though, after I over clocked the SP's independantly of the core, from 1288 to 1404.Thats when I started seeing load temps in the 90's

Ok well I'll give ya that. But still I at least gave him a link to the product he is looking for as opposed to one you think is better. To others that may look like your just being a ati fanboy. I will withhold judgment from that. Im just saying if your gonna derail from a subject somewhat then at least have it pertain to the same product the op is talking about.

MANNY

Note:I always set Rivatuner to run fan @100% all the time ,it will not hurt your fan....

;)123Lanoix ;)

BFGtech and EVGA are using the A3 cores on all present 8800's what you can expect to see 650-729mhz easy on the GPU and the Shader @1550-1745mhz with Memory from 900-1050mhz ,just make shure you Set the Fan to 100% if you are using Rivatuner to OC!

Well mine is on AIr with a extra 120Fan installed...I lowered my GPU a hair because of the new Beta163.75 driver....But i cant complain....Just make Shure if your gonna watercool it or change the stock fan, Get a EVGA because Bfg dosnt warranty fan changes yet!!

My A3 8800GTS320 after gaming for 40minutes....My Oc is the first set of Numbers on left side of the Graph...My stock Clocks are the numbers to the Right side....MY card i modded and thats why my temps are way low....Before modding temps were 50c idle and 71c underload....with stock fan @100%..

3Dmark06 with the Above Oc...Im still tweaking it but its not bad at all for only a 320mb!!!!!!The 640mb does even better:D

!gOtVolTage!

I know about Rivatuner and the fan options all to well, but thanks ! :)

Thing is I cant use the fan options at all,as I dont use a fan on my black pcb GTS 640 ! :D My card is running passive with a lapped Thermalright HR-03+ with IC Diamond 7 TIM.
