Overclocking 6950 and catalyst controller is limiting the OC?!

im using catalyst control center [since my card refuses to run at stock so i clock it to 840]
and it keeps limiting my OCing to 840 and the power is limited, so when i open up msi afterburner, its just artifacts and plays for a moment, or just freezes or goes to the colorful screen with lines and blocks [just like when i was overclocking it the first time i got my 6950 reference card which is unlocked :D] but i had it running at 1010 MHz and a whopping crazy 1100 MHz [insane i know, but it ran 3dmark 11 fine, ONE time]

am i doing something wrong having the catalyst controller and msi running at the same time,
because before i had to increase the power on the catalyst controller +20% to oc it.

i would love to know how to OC it again.
any help on this would be very much appreciated! thanks!

Why are you using CCC instead of Afterburner to overclock? What brand of card is it? Try Sapphire TRIXX as well. That's what I use on my 6950s.

its from HIS, and i remember having to use CCC or it wouldnt OC when they first came out.. didnt know if that changed things lol.
i guess back then it was not supported so you had to increase the voltage idk but i do remember HAVING to do it or else it wanted to just freeze

ill have to check out sapphire TRIXX. is it better than msi afterburner?

They both do basically the same thing but TRIXX has a more convenient layout and options for the 6950 like disable ULPS built into the menu so you don't need to registry tweak... Afterburner is more compact, has better monitoring, is slightly deeper, etc.

BTW, did you disable ULPS? That may be the reason.

I have used both on my cards with no problems. TRIXX might only work with Sapphire cards, I don't know.

whats upls? and i havent disabled that since i have no idea what it is...
and that must be the reason.. i went to look up what upls stands for, didnt find anything :(
but i see something about CCC having to do with it...im gonna look on how to disable it unless you know a link or if its quick to explain

even if it works only for sapphire cards i can still use msi. either way ill oc it.

let me try and get the TRIXX and see if it will work for my card...and then worry about the registry..i totally didnt see " TRIXX has a more convenient layout and options for the 6950 like disable ULPS built into the menu so you don't need to registry tweak"
lol

alright so trixx works for me, i dont need a sapphire card, but not out of the woods just yet.. i hope this works.... UPLS disabled, GPU clocks 1010 MHZ, 1600 memory clock,

ULPS is ultra low power state. It causes some crossfire issues but might be causing your card to throttle but that's unlikely.

I don't understand what you mean by "and the power is limited" ? Why did your card stop overclocking when it did before?

when the 6950 card came out CCC had 2 different settings, one for fan speed, and one for the power controller, you had to have the power controll setting at +20% or it would not over clock at all, and would be limited to a clock speed of 800.
when you set the powercontroll +20% you could overclock it past the stock settings.

now CCC [after updating my drivers ] has a clock speed setting, a memory speed setting and the fan control and power control.. for some reason it wont let me over clock it past 840 mhz [the max CCC allows.... should i just get the display drivers and everything BUT CCC? maybe that will stop it from limiting me to 840 mhz?
but CCC never had any clock settings before just power and fan controll. maybe now all i need is just trixx and i can get rid of CCC... what do you think?
