Im overclocking my 4890, its maxing out around 910mhz on core (passed 3dmark several times @ 925 but ati tool through up some artifacts).

Memory seems to be good all the way to 1100 (artifacts at 1125).

I keep my core at 900mhz and memory at 1100.

Is it worth it to overclock the card? From your expirience is it beneficial to performance or just a hobby. Im gonna try and get my PC to be more quiet, so i dont want to hear a lot of the fans.

Thats why Im asking the question.

Have you guys noticed a large performance improvement?

What kind of HD4890 do u have? I just bought the XFX HD4890 from BB's, and I tried oc'ing it, but the max I got was 900/1100 artifact free, 3D and Fur benchable w/ no visible artifacting, 1440x900 on an ACER x203H, 550BE oc'ed to 3.61, 4GB DDR3. Is there a BIOS out there that might turn this into a 1000/1100 monster? ;)

Scorpio,

I have that exact damn card. The one from bestbuy. It seems that it is not a referance card! There is no volterra voltage chip, so we cant adjust the voltage through rivatuner. I tried flashing the bios with RBE editing to add voltage, but that didnt help either.

I put on a accelero S1 v2 on it, but whenever i try to put heatsinks on the VRM's it crashes. No joke, so i dont have those cooled. I think the card is a lower quality card.

I use ATI tool to check for artifacts, and my card is identical to yours, i cant push higher without artifacts. I have not seen a bios or anything for it, it seems to be a newer card.

OCing vid cards rarely gets you much. A frame or three here and there, based on settings that give you mins in the 20s and max in the 60 or 70s and air cooling. It sometimes is enough to get you over a hump and allow you to raise the res or eye candy a notch and still remain playable, but that is rare truthfully. It is a hobby, and some people just want to get the absolute most out of their hardware as is possible.

The 4890 however, is a rarity among high end cards, it does tend to OC a bit further than is the norm for a high end card, and the gains are noticeable especially if you can get it up near 950-1000 gpu 1100 mem. But still that is usually not enough to do much more than twist the AA up one notch, if that much, most of the time.

Rarity... huh?

Not to bag it or anything but if you get it to 950 core that's a meager 100mhz overclock.

I personally own a Vapor-X 4890 and it's a great card, but i don't see them as being an overclocking rarity.

Yours may overclock well.. but mine sure doesnt lol. I have an S1 V2 on it, basically to keep it quiet at stock speeds... and its still not that quiet.

hopefully my friend will buy it from me for 200 bucks with AC cooler and fans, its brand new. Then ill save some money and go ahead and purchase a 5850 if its instock.

oh here i pray for next month lol

For a mid to high end card without volt mods or aftermarket cooling, 100Mhz OC is actually pretty rare until recently. Getting an OC of only 25 to 50 was a chore on my 8800, 9800, and 4870. The generations b4 that were even worse most of the time when it came to high end cards. Since the AIB's did and still do tend to push them damn near as far as they can go right off the blocks. Was not trying to pimp the 4890 or anything, just saying that it one of the few high end cards that tended to OC enough that you could actually notice it when playing games. Outside of a frame or two here and there in a benchmark, I never noticed any performance gains at all from OCing a vid card. With some mid to low end cards, you could OC the hell out of them. But it rarely got you much of a performance boost, since they tended to be crippled in other ways, making it almost pointless to bother. Just my opinion, yours may differ.
