I can't seem to find this online. How much faster does a system get when you're running at say DDR500 instead of DDR400. Also, is faster ram better than ram with tighter settings? Thanks.

The DDR rating is 2x the actual speed in Mhz. So DDR400 RAM runs at 200Mhz.

DDR500 RAM can run up to 250Mhz.

The reason people buy mem faster than DDR400 is so they don't have to use a divider on their memory when they overclock.

In my experiences, Intel based systems favor higher FSB while AMD based system favor tighter timings. I have PC4200 in my system that can run 1:1 at 271FSB, I get like 6.4gb/s in sisoft, but in order to run at 3.4ghz I need to use a 5:4 divider that takes that speed down to about 6.0-6.1gb/s.

Of coarse this is all with DDR1, I have no idea about DDR2.

So nobody has any really concrete data about how much faster ram might be. Why would anyone avoid using a divider on their memory clock if the ram will be no more of less fast?

Ya know, you could always benchmark the two settings yourself...

I'd rather not spend $250-$300 on ram to see if the speed improvements really are worth spending $250-$300 ;)

I doubt the extra speed is gonna be worth that much just to go from DDR400 to DDR500.

I have got Corsair DDR400 that runs at DDR480 $200 at newegg 3-3-3-5. I get much better in game benchmarks on my 4400 x2 at DDR480 than I do at DDR400 2-2-2-5. In my case the extra speeds seems to help.

I'm sure the faster memory will help but I don't think it'd be worth $250-$300. What kind of memory are you looking at that costs that much? I've seen 2x1GB of DDR 500 for under $200.

What is the reset of your system? The money might be better spent elsewhere.
