Overclock won't pass Prime95

100 buckx was an example... it could be 70 buckx... 60 buckx.... or .... ??

and.. you don't have to break your CPU everyday....... you can if you want to but.... why do that though... maybe once a mo. or a year.... but but.. i never killed my xp1700.. it's what.... 2 years old now? been running over 2v most of the time... hmmmmmm....... oh! i got it, it's my experience and cooling skill!!

well....... not everyone wants to shell out a $100 bucks all the time if they can keep from it. i dont let my cpu get over 53C.
oh.. and... 53C is too high for me. my expectation is in the teens to under 0C.... :p

So far i have been running prime95 for about 16 hours with no problem on the barton 2500+. I have it at 200x11 and Vcore is = 1.700V ,, but my asus probe is reading 1.744V. My temps are looking good.. i tried to make the room as hot as possible and i got a reading of 56C. right now with the room at it's normal temp it reads about 53-54c... what do you guys think?

I'm gonna keep running prime till about 1:00 AM that will complete alittle over 24 Hrs of testing... you think i can call this a sucessful overclock? This is my first time over clock :)

This is the best way to overclock. Few people actually try to increase ambient temps in order to make allowances for fluctuations in temperature. pld ;)

Ok.. i'm still testing with Prime.. and it's looking good.. but i have a question about mem timings.. like i said before my current timing is 2.5-4-4-8, does setting it to 2-2-2-8 sound realistic, or even 2.5-2-2-8? I think i'm gonna try 2.5-3-3-8 first (small steps would be best i'm sure)... Here's my other question.. how do i test if these timings are good? Do i just run Prime again? also if so which test in Prime?

Also.. what do i do about the tRAS? Cause the mem FAQ doesn't really give much on what i should set it to.. seems like i should leave it alone? What do you guys think?

Thanks a lot for the help, as this is my first time overclocking, and first time I fiddle with mem timings :)

my XP-M 2500+ is set to 12.5 X 200 @ 2.51 41c idol and about 47 load on AIR !!!

It runs flawless in FarCry, Prince of Perisa, Counter-Strike, AOE2, Man Hunt, Call of Duty, MOHAA, NFSU and the list can continue, however, it won't pass prime95 for more then 2 minutes. Do I care? Hell no. Why? I can't tell.

If it runs fine, be happy! :p
I had the same attitude as you about Prime failing after a couple minutes, then a few weeks later I got myself a corrupt Windows and a supposedly 80c hot CPU... out of the blue! I had to remove and put back in the battery on my motherboard because clearing CMOS did not help the CPU temp. As you can see, if prime thinks it's unstable, tone it down!

yeah id try the 2.5-3-3-8 and see if that does anything. im not sure what kind of ram you have so i dont know if the 2-2-2-8 is do-able or not. anyhow heres you a link that might help explain memory timings a bit more http://www.iamnotageek.com/articles.php?aid=1&page=1 .

hey ranch dressing, run "Blend" in prime95 torture options. That's very intensive and puts a lot of strain on the memory. If not that, at least run "In-place large FFTs", which is moderately intensive on memory. or you might as say fu@k it and just run memtest86...

Thanks for the sites and stuff.. but i won't be able to fiddle with my RAM timings for a while.. i'm leaving town for a week (going home :) )

/me laughs at the people who bought 2500+'s.

I'll take my 11x200 for $45 before I take an extra 256K of cache at a lower FSB for twice that amount. 1800+ JIUHB all the way. Prime95 48-hours-stable, stock cooling with AS5 @ 45°C load (after 48hours)
:D :D

And if it blows up? That's $45.

Lifetime warranty on Hard-drives, and I get advanced RMA (they send me a new one before I send in the old one), so by the time they can even think about "this is corrupted due to OC'ing", I have a new drive.

^^^ i didn't buy the 2500+ to overclock it.... i just bought it to have a decent CPU in my system.. then i discoverd overclocking.. so blah to you.. mister grumbles. :D :)

how come for some reason my bios doesn't support v. higher then 1.8 or mem v. over 2.7.

I'd just like to say that my overclock passed 24 hours and 20 minutes of prime 95.. with my room being hot as hell (i never thought i could make my room so hot)... w00t!!!
