overclock options

so guys i got a problem here:

i got recently another 2gbs of ram (now 6gbs of ram) and lost my ability to overclock to 3.4ghz on my q6600

so my question is what is better?

-q6600 at 3.0ghz with 6gbs of ram
-q6600 at 3.4ghz with 4gbs of ram

also this is with an sli setup

What are you system specs?

Might need to bump up the northbridge voltage. But in all honesty you're not going to see much a difference between 4 and 6 GB's of RAM.

Seeing as how some of that RAM isn't rated to the same speeds as the rest, it's not all that surprising that it won't work. The non-extreme won't clock as high, which is what's keeping you back. Try to find the max OC on the non-extreme and then put the extreme back in at the lower clock. That should work.

Really, anything beyond 4gb's for games is fluff. You really start to see the benefit of more than 4gb's when running multiple memory hungry apps or VM's.

Depends how much ram you are using. If you're never going above 4gb of ram usage, or never need to, then the faster CPU speed will be better. However, as soon as you go over 4gb of ram usage and your PC needs to access the page file, no amount of CPU power will help out there, so 6gb of ram will be better.

I don't think gaming will see much advantage the 2 gb of extra ram or the .4Ghz oc. So my recommendation is to figure what you want outside of gaming. More ram or faster proc. And also take BASIC's recommendation of trying to find the fastest clock for your slower 2gb (by itself), then add the good ram in. You might find you can go above 3.0Ghz with 6GB.

well i have an nvidia board and it allows me to unlink the ram

but its weird, i cant hit 3.2ghz but can go to 3.4ghz
