Hi

I have a Palit 9600GT non Sonic version and it hangs when I tries to play games. I tried a 8800GTX and it is fine. PCIe is locked at 100 mhz. Normal usage is fine, jusst games causes a black screen. Everythign is fine if i default to the stock clocks. What is the problem?

Also the memory on the card gets too hot to touch as the Palit cooler does not touch the memory chips. Is that ok?

Thanks!

Blow cold air at it and see if it improves.

The point is card is not overclocked - the system is. The card should run fine at stock. I have 2 separate concerns here.

How can you RMA a card with the reason - 'i cannot overclock the rest of thie system with this card running at stock?'. The 9600GT works fine if I do no toverclock the system - i DO NOT overclock the 9600GT at all.

Well there's the problem then isn't it? You need to stability test your overclock and figure out where it is stable and how much further you're pushing it.

Hmm I thought the point was that your system becomes unstable.
I guess its easier to think of reasons not to test anything.

The system is stable at overclock with a 8800GTX, but not a 9600GT. The only difference is the video card, not anything else has changed. No video cards are overclocked. I am using a Quadro FX550 on the same overclock and it is fine. There seems to be a problem with the 9600GT running on stock speeds with a overclcoked system.

Sorry to be Captain Obvious but yeah. Troubleshooting consists of finding the part that introduces a problem into the system. I fail to see why you do not follow this simple logic except that you might just be frustrated and not thinking clearly.

It is obvious what the problem is as I have said from the first post - this 9600GT card cannot work with my system if my clock is raised by 1 mhz. The 8800GTX and Quadro FX550 does though. So my question is if anyone have the same issue that certain cards do not like to work with overclocked system and is there any solution? Remember that the PCIe bus is running at stock. I am using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L board.

For those who do not understand my post below is a simple explanation.

Stock 9600GT + Stock system = OK
Overclocked 9600GT card + Stock system - OK
Stock 9600GT = Overclocked system - NOT OK

It is just weird for me. I have built overclocked systems for 10 years and definately knows where to start from if there is an obvious problem. I am a little close to being frustrated because people are posting replies without understanding the issues. I am not thinking clearly as there is no logic to this issue.

Do some testing and maybe you will find an amicable solution.

People can't really "help" you because the problem you are talking about doesn't make any sense. If the PCI-E bus is locked, then the video card not only won't care but can't even know if the rest of the system is overclocked. It sounds to me more like a coincidence than a problem with the 9600GT.

Something in the rest of your system is causing the problem (or the PCIe bus isn't really being locked), it isn't the 9600GT.

I am running at 424 FSB, so if it is not locked then you are talking about 200+ FSB on the PCIe bus? I doubt any board can take it. The coputer boots fine, it just cannot play any games or watch any movies sometimes. The system still continues through working, only that the screen goes black. I can just force quit the game and I am back to normal at 3.6ghz.

The PCIe bus is locked at 100fsb in the BIOS - something must be overiding it then only for this card - and if it does, iit must have increased not much as it will not be equavilant to a 424 fsb speed.

I guess it is just this card and I will have to change it. .

Also this particular card only

Look for something that might be the trigger. Have you tried updating to the latest motherboard BIOS? When you install the 9600GT, did you uninstall the nVidia drivers, driver sweep in safe mode, then re-install?

the OP has already noticed that the gfx cards memory is running hot due to inadequate cooling, but he wont find if that is the cause of the problem. because (as he stated)...

I agree with Nenu. If you've noticed the memory getting too hot, blow some air over it and see what it does.

I have stated that the card can be overclocked - ran fine overclocked for 8 hours of gaming on a stock machine. Heat is a concern but obviuosly not the problem here. In fact it is running 3Dmark overclocked in my machine right now - but if I raise my CPU by 1 mhz it freezes. It is actually on my table and not even in a case.

Swop to a ASUS P5E board and everything is fine. The problem seems ot be with the damn board not happy with the 9600GT. Oh well, making a decision to get rid of either the board or the card ia easier then going thru all this trouble. thanks everyone for your thoughts. Any one knows the Gigabyte problem please let me know.
