Overclock CPU Cooler Question

Hi,

I have a quick question. I know there are many reviews on different CPU coolers at stock and Oc speeds. Many of us know the stock cpu provided to us by a CPU company is really meant for stock speeds at the most. I am not using the Stock cooler by the way.

Alright. Specs of my main rig are in the signature. I am using a TT Big Typhoon original version. The base has been lapped. In my quest to push my Q6600 to 3.1 and beyond I feel like I am running into a wall. I understand not every Q6600 SLACR G0 core will go to 3.6. However, is it possible the CPU cooler is holding back the overclock? I am thinking along the lines of the CPU cooler is not being able to dissipate the heat fast enough when the CPU cooler is at full load.

I do know about my voltage adjustments and the such. I am wondering if a CPU cooler fan or the whole cooler itself should be looked at.

Let me know what you all think.

We need more info. What voltage are you trying to use to get up to 3.6? I see in your sig
Q6600@ 3.0GHz 1.21V

Ah, stock voltage on that chip is like 1.35, so you overclocked it and lowered its default voltage? Your not trying to hit 3.6 on that 1.21v are you? Sheet, I have a 45nm and I cant hit 3.6 at 1.30v....

What do your temps look like? Are you overheating, you didnt really give any examples.

hi,

Well I was trying the KISS approach and did not want an info overload.

Right now I am trying for a 3.2 OC

Voltages 1.45 in BIOS setting
Actual according to the BIOS and CPU-Z 1.392
Under load conditions 1.32

Temps idle 31-36 over the 4 cores
Temps load 62,62, 58,58

I did change the fan from the stock 1300RPM fan to a 2000RPM fan. I have seen an increase of 2° C in the video card temp at idle with the faster fan.

As for where I was coming from in the original posting, I was thinking along the lines of too much heat in the cooler and it could not dissipate fast enough.

When I tried to go to a 3.6 OC, I was at around 1.42 volts under load. Temps were in the mid 70s with the stock fan. I set the Volts to 1.55 for a 1.49 in Bios and CPU-Z. Fail time was about 3 minutes.

I am wondering if the Typhoon can handle the heat at faster speeds. At stock volts and mild OC to 3.0 no problem. I am wondering if getting a vertical cooling solution (Like the Thermalright 120 extreme) would work better than a horizontal solution (Big Typhoon) for heat dissipation. The case I have is an Antec 900.

Alright I have to run. If you need something answered ask.

Hi,

Just an update. I think I just have a so so overclocker. I could not get her stable at 3.2GHz. I got to about 1.5 volts at 3.2 and this chip did not want to having anything to do with it. My E6420 was no sweat at 3.2 using stock volts. I reverted everything back to 3.0 and stock volts. Everyone is happy. Who knows it could be my motherboard or something else.

Hi,

Well I am not saying I do not know what I am doing but I am kinda stumped here. I think I might have a decent overclocker. I managed to get this Q6600 running at 3.41.

BIOS setting 1.45
Voltage @ idle 1.39
Voltage @ load 1.32
(measured with CPU-Z)

Temps at load
Temps are 70, 70, 65,65 Celsius using the stock Big Typhoon fan. When using a 2,000 RPM fan, temps go down to 65,65,60,60. The noise is a bit much though.

Here is what I am wondering.

I know voltage kills. Is it possible that too much voltage would make a chip unstable? In other words, a voltage sweet spot.

Temps at load. Is the spread good or do I have a problem with cooler or IHS? To me it seems weird that Cores 0 and 1 are 5 degrees higher than cores 2 and 3. Yes I have tried reseating the heatsink.

Like in my original posting, I mention an abundance of heat within the cooler. Could the position of the cooler affect overall OC performance? A Big Typhoon sits horizontal to the CPU and board. A number of coolers like the TRUE, Tuniq, Noctua, and others, are vertical or perpendicular to CPU and board. In effect, they are in line with the natural air flow of the case. I am thinking the Big Typhoon might not be able to handle the additional heat load due to less dissipating fins and placement of the cooler. The Typhoon compared to other coolers, seem to have less fins for cooling.

Let me know what you all think here. I do not think the CPU and Motherboard are the problem.

i dont see what your problem your seeing is.... 3.41 is a very good overclock, especially with the cooling setup your using...the only way you'll go higher is pelteir or water cooling

Hi,

ack necro threading! :) I think I found the answer that I am looking for. TDP ratings of CPUs and the coolers. I am wondering if the original version of the Big Typhoon was not rated for Quad core overclocking. (i.e. could not displace the heat from the cooler fast enough.) This is why I keeping thinking there is an abundance of heat in the cooler.

Right now I am playing with a 3.2 overclock with 1.25 load volts. Temps are running right around 58,58,55,55. I am wondering if there is a voltage "sweet spot". If tonight's test goes well, I shall try a bit more and a bit faster. I might also look into getting a TRUE with Flex fan set up.
