Overclock Assistance Needed

Hello,
Thank you first of all for previewing my post, and any/all suggestions an such that you can give.

I upgraded my system (to most of you, probably not much of a upgrade.. but is major to what I had before), and I want to push my system a bit more than what it is currently running at stock.

I'm not wanting to completely push my system to a burn out, but push it a bit harder than what it's currently at.

These are my specs:

Motherboard: ASUS M3A78-T 790GX
Processor: AMD Athlon X2 5400+ Black Edition
Heatsink: Zalman CNPS 9500
Memory: 2 X 2GB (4GB Total) G.Skill DDR2 800
Video Card: ASUS EAH 4830 PCIe x16 512MB GDDR3


I have AMD OverDrive but haven't read much positive out of it, and testing it on my system it will not keep it's settings, and will only push the CPU to 3.111GHz on AutoClock before it will complete.

I'm open to any suggestions, the most I am wanting out of my CPU is possible 3.2GHz. I have MX-2 Thermal Paste applied, I haven't had the system built long enough for full application I guess you could say, as I have heard it takes up to 200 hours.

since it is a black edition cpu.. all you need to change is the multiplier and voltage.. i havent messed with the 5400+ but 3.2ghz is probably a good possibility with the cpu.. though i have seen brisbanes go as high as 3.5ghz.. but takes a huge amount of voltage to do so.. believe the last numbers ive seen was some where in the range of 1.58v which is still within spec for 65nm which is 1.6v..

so id say try changing the multiplier first.. if its unstable at stock voltage.. bump it up a little at a time once it becomes stable.. though it should do 3ghz at 1.38v so id say shoot for some where in the range of 1.48-1.5v and see how high you can go with the multiplier..

brisbanes run pretty cool.. i currently have my x2 be-2350 (brisbane) @ 3.05ghz @ 1.38v running full load stock cooler at 51C though ive seen it go as high as 53c if i close my bedroom door.. the max temp for brisbane cores is 72C..

but that would be my starting suggestion.. and just see how things go.. but i see no reason why it couldnt do 3.2ghz..

Well.. the thing is just basically, how the BIOS is set up for the OC options, I don't understand what I need to increase, an when... then stress it for stability and go on. Here's a screenshot of the CPU-Z and CoreTemp as of right now, I'll find my camera and get some shots of BIOS.

When booting, and you get the Asus Rock Solid Heart touching screen, Press Delete to enter setup.

Once in there, Head into Advanced, Go into Configure System Frequency/Voltage Sub menu, and you see the Processor Frequency Multiplier? Thats what you need to mess with and of course the Processor Voltage a few choices right under it.

Yeah, I noticed the multiplier, it has preset to it.. x4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, Reserved, 6.5, Reserved, and 7.5.

Is this the normal settings it should have? and would I start just at 4.0 and go up? It doesn't show me what the multiplier is set at right now. In CPU-Z it shows 14 X, but for some reason I don't think it's the same thing.

Nevermind the last post.. I found out the hard way that it does go way up into 14 X and above. What I did was I set my Voltage to 1.30, and put the Mutliplier at 4 X, and failed to get a boot on restart at all.. I had to use the C.P.R function so that I could boot back up into BIOS which is when I noticed it.

Right now I have it at 14.5 X and getting 2.9GHz, a 100MHz Overclock, but at least I have a understanding somewhat of what I am doing.

My next question is.. Will this effect my memory any? as far as tightening or loosening the timings? or is it even worth it?

You have a black edition cpu, meaning its Multi is unlocked, so you do not have to mess with ram timings/speeds at all, Just raise the multi and voltage to get the overclock you want/need.

Sometimes it helps to lay off the multiplier a bit and up the FSB even with a Black Edition. However, I would say that just increasing the multiplier and upping the voltage should get you pretty close to your max OC.

4x is to low for that cpu.. theres a minimum multiplier a cpu will allow.. i believe its 5 or 6x on that processor.. go from the stock multiplier.. which shows up in cpu-z when you use the default bios settings.. then go back to the bios and start raising it from there..
