I have an old system I built in 2003. Its a Asus A7N8X-Deluxe, Barton 2500+, WD 80gb Special Edition, Corsair XMS pc3200 512mb DDR400, BFG FX-5500OC. Ok... I overclocked the cpu to 3200+. Im using a Themaltake 11 Xaser Edition heatsink and fan (ajustable 1300~4800) and artic silver 5. I always run the fan at max and my cpu temp is 47~49 idle and 50~52 playing games. Is this high or is it just me? Its been running like this for the past 2 1/2 years+

Fans:

1 Blowhole on top with a TT Turbo fan (man does it flow and its very loud) (same fan as the heatsink) FLOWS OUT

2 60mm on side panels bottom FLOWS IN

1 front HD cooler contanes of 3 mini fans (with no HD there) FLOWS OUT

A better sink might lower temps, but if the machine is stable then don't worry about the temps. Besides the money you'd spend on a better sink should go toward more RAM. Another 512 can be had cheaply and is a wise investment. ;)

I agree, if you're satisfied with the overclock and the system is stable, then it's not worth putting more money into an older computer. If you're still looking for a bit more performance, another $30 will get you twice the ram.

But, yes, it is relatively high. My load temps never exceed 45C and I run my fan at approx. 1500rpm.

The temps are well within spec. I believe those older bartons run hot dont they? I never owned one. Probably is fine.

The load temps are fine for the older athlon XP's.
You idle temps are a bit high though which suggests the CPU disconnect funtion isnt working. (CPU disconnect powers down the CPU when it is idling/not in use)

Firstly enable cpu disconnect in the CMOS if the setting exists for it.
You may then need to reinstall Windows or modify it yourself as once CPU disconnect is disabled, a different driver is loaded and you cant reload the correct driver.
If thats not the issue its very likely your motherboard or BIOS doesnt support your CPU fully and you need to use a utility like "CPU idle", "CPU cool"... to allow the CPU to turn off when not in use.
You may need to use this util even if CPU disconnect is enabled in the CMOS.

Windows NT upwards are supposed to make sure that CPU disconnect is used on all compliant CPU's but it quite often didnt work a while back unless you used a util to cool the cpu.
The tools dont work on all motherboards so you need to find one that does work with your motherboard. There may even be a util on the motherboards CD. They are sometimes included with the temp monitoring software.
