Hey everyone,

First of all I'm pretty new to overclocking. I have a g3258 that I was 'lucky' enough to basically one click overclock in the UEFI. Anyway, I've since bought a much beefier processor and am interested in overclocking it. Its an i7 4770k, and while not totally necessary (obviously) I'd like to run a modest overclock

Anyway, is it completely foolish to do any overclocking at all without some sort of aftermarket cooling solution?? I'm kind of worried as I've read that the 4770 in particular runs pretty hot stock, so I'm not sure if I should get a cooler even before overclocking, or if I could manage even permanent turbo boost speeds without a cooler??

Any opinions or insight is appreciated. Thanks!

I would not recommend overclocking a 4770K for 24/7 use without a proper aftermarket cooler. You will quickly hit your thermal limit, cause throttling, and wacky stuff will ensue.

The good news is, aftermarket coolers are quite cheap. A CoolerMaster Hyper 212 will sustain a modest/high overclock (not an extreme one) and will set you back a mere $20-30 bucks.
