Over clocking and game errors

built my comp about 2 years ago and OC'ed it to 2.6GHz. Its a AMD 64 3700 with 7800GTX and 2G of OCZ pc4000 RAM. Played several online games with it and countless other games with no problems. This one game Im having trouble with so customer support wanted me to send an everest report to them because they couldnt figure out what was wrong. Natually and as I expected, the OC was the first thing they pointed out being the culprit. Of course when i built it, i stressed it over a day and seemed to work great and hasnt proven otherwise since. (actually stressed tested it several times over the course of bumping up my clock little by little.) I wanted to clock a little higher had it not been for the A8N SLI deluxe that i cant seem to clock over 240Mhz but thats another topic for another post unless someone wants to chime in on that. It runs cool at full load except the 7800 which has an airplane prop of a 120mm fan over it (8 fans total not including chipset).

Question is, can 1 particular game manifest game crashes and instability Prime95 and orthos couldnt?

How does it crash? Or what kind of error are you getting? It could be driver related. Where are you at as far as drivers are concerned? Can you do runs of 3dmark06?

Unless you can do a 24hr+ session of prime and a good 8h session of 3d mark loops or ati tool, I wouldn't fully discount an overclock as a culprit.

dx is updated to latest as is xp. SB x-fi and nvidia drivers are up to date too. Im assumming in the everest logs they would have pointed that out as well if not. I also built a near identical comp for my GF using a x2 4200. She plays the same game and doesnt crash so it does support the OC as the culprit as much as Id hate to admit it. Just weird that the ONLY trouble ive ever had was on this game. we ran 3dmark quite abit to see how well my OC stacked against her dual core 4200 stock. although i lost, it wasnt by much and i saved a hundred someodd bucks at the time (well i didnt save any as I didnt have the extra to begin with) I digress... anyway, the error is just simply crashing and giving a "send report to technical support" window for the crash so it doesnt give any error message. Id rather not revert back default clock just to play the game. i mean hell that was the whole purpose of building it was to get into overclocking. When i first built it, and hit the 240MHz, i prime95ed it all night and it has been clocked at 2.6 every since (that was 2 years ago. I have since orthos'ed (not for mre than 30 minutes however because quite frankly its boring as hell watching your comp stress test) it and it doesnt seem to have trouble. Can 1 game have a particular issue with an OC while nothing else does? I must admit i dont have enough experience messing with timings so maybe its just ram related. Another thing, any reason I cant over clock over 240MHz? I think i read here or elsewhere about it had something to do with voltage issues on a different model ASUS MB. I read the review on here about the A8N and they say they hit over 300Mhz so i must be possible.

An help with the ins and outs of ram timings would be much appreciated

different chips have different overclock capabilities, to say that one is stable because the other is stable is not going to make it stable...

When I first built this rig 3 months ago, It passed prime 95 at >29hours at BOTH 9x400 and 8x450...

3 weeks ago I couldn't even pass at stock, a game that kept giving me issues, Quake Wars. I thought it was the game too, but my gut told me something worse. Turned out my memory was failing the overclock, then finally just went altogether.

You keep dismissing the overclock despite NOT fully stressing it. I've had supposed stable overclocks fail after the 8 hour mark or 12 hour mark, the test repeats itself AFTER 24 hours, till then it's fairly unique testing for those 24 hours and it finally hits a combination that is heavilly ram and cpu intensive enough to crash a core or 2 at those times. 30 mins is NOT enough of a test.

i prime 95ed it over a day when I first hit 2.6. that was 2 years ago and hasnt changed since nor have I had any trouble till now. i know 30 minute orthos isnt enough. that was more about seeing my temps at full load with different fan speed settings since i have manual control. THe simple question is will a seemingly stable OC cause instability in 1 game and the short answer ive gathered from the replies that its a definite possibility. Ill remove the OC and see how it goes. if i continue to crash then ill know what its not.
