Outlook not connecting to intranet exchange server, only internet server!

We have an exchange server at my place of employment. When setting up an email in outlook, it will list the account as [email protected]. This means is it going out to the inernet server and coming back into our network. When it is working right is just shows the users first and last name, underlined. The only way I have found to fix this is to remove and add the user repeatedly until it works correctly. Anyone have any suggestions!?
 
I don't have any credentials with Microsoft Exchange, but just because it says [email protected] does not mean it's going out and back in. That can be local as well.
 
Well, this is how my boss explained it to me. It is possible he is not correct. But it does work better the second way.
 
do

nslookup domain.com

if it comes back to a LAN IP then it's working correctly, if it comes back to your WAN IP then you have a DNS problem, either not using the domain DNS or it's somehow horribly misconfigured.
