Outdated game mechanics.

What game mechanics do you consider outdated?
Level grinding. Money grinding. Basically, grinding.

I do not think health or armor pickups are outdated. I think they facilitate a very particular game design and keep the player going forward. As, i think health regeneration tends to make players idle for too long. Slowing general game progression to a halt. But, again, two very different designs for different audiences.

Cannot beleive I did not think og this sooner, Bullet Sponges, the worst game design decision ever.

Think is, I'm really tired with fetch quests, level grinding, camp captures... but if they lead to good cutscenes, with proper dialogue and VA, integrated into a good story, I'm ok with those "tired" mechanics. Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect 1-3, Greedfall, Titanfall 2, Witcher 3, AC: Odyssey stick out as examples that employ somewhat "tired" mechanics, but the payoff in writing and story makes it worth the trip.

But what is the alternative?
seriously? properly designing a game, including level design, mob placement, amount and a half baked AI.

Bullet sponges are nothing more than lazy development and lack of innovation. Why design something when you can just crank the mobs HP up to the point it takes severall minutes of non-stop fire just to take one down.

I've been playing through Deadly Premonition from 2010 and I avoid picking items up as much as possible, because as soon as you pick an item up, it flashes to a black screen and says "You got item" and will show a 3d render of the item.

I don't know how many games employ this, I know a few used to do it, but man is it annoying and I don't think it belongs in current games.

If you play something like COD or battlefield single player I can see your point, but games like borderlands or the division I dont realy see any use in mobs that die with 1 bullet. If there is an RPG element you need something to differentiate mobs or there is no strenght difference between enemies. You would not even have bossfights.

Not being bullet sponges does not mean dying in one bullet, the extreme that Division in particular has taken enemy HP is just stupid, and its not even for boss fights, its for regular mobs.

If its an RPG then you've been played shorty, the point of an RPG is to grow more powerful and ultimately feel more powerful, yet in Division and Destiny it is the opposite, the mobs become more powerful than you leading to extremely long TTK. Its a grind designed to keep you running on a treadmill with little meaningful reward. In BL I can gear up enough to stay above the curve, not so much in Division.

I didn't say boss fights, and certainly bullet sponges are well and truly beyond boss fights.

To be honest, live service games are not my cup of tea past an initial playthough and a bit of side activities, their design is too similar to a casino and I have no interest in supporting them.
