OUT OF RANGE?

shipped my old rig to my buddy. he gets the tower and tries to get it running. the post screen comes up, then an error message comes up stating OUT OF RANGE h79.9khz - v74.9hz. we tried re-seating the card, clearing Cmos, checking the monitor to make sure it works. blue box h79.9khz - v74.9hz i was using a different monitor than what he was using. what could be the problem? is the card bad? what could cause this?

boot to safe mode and reset the refresh rate or res or both to some thing lower
if that dont work just use driver cleaner to nuke the driver then just re-install it
 
make sure the resolution in windows in turned down
he can do this blind if need be
from the windows desktop:

right click > arrow up > enter > Shift+Tab > right arrow x4 > Tab > left arrow x 4 > enter > enter
 
we cant even get into windows. we are stuck im BIOS. this screen is a black screen with a blue box stating that "frequency out of range". we replaced the vid card with another and all worked. im thinking the POST OFFICE harmed the vid card in shipping. he doesnt have another computer with an AGP slot to test it. we put the resolution to 800X600 and have done the SAFE mode boot up. any other ideas? when we use the older video card, we can go into windows and everything is good. but cannot get past the frequency out of range on the 6800GT (newer card)
 
When Windows starts loading press F8 and select VGA Mode, that should solve your problem.
 
Your not in dos, the monitor cant handle the selected resolution/refresh rates, start up in vga mode and set the resolution and refresh rate to something the monitor can handle.
 
when u get to VGA mode, how do you reset resolution and refresh rate? are there choices or do you have to do it through a command prompt?

VGA Mode just sets the resolution to 640x480@60hz
 
yeah - that sucks... best thing to do is what someone already said, but for grins, here it is again. Boot to safe mode, blast the driver away (remove the device from the devices menu), and then reboot... hopefully windows will probe the new monitor when it tries to reload the video device driver and he'll be in like flynn. :)

That seems like alot of work just to change resolution :)

not really... I have done it many times before... it just requires 20 seconds of safe mode work and a reboot... when windows loads again it find the device, load the driver (because it's still on the PC) and sets it to the default res, like 800x600 or something.. then you go change it, and make sure the right monitor driver is being used. I guess you could edit the win.ini file or something... does XP even use a win.ini?

ok - that might be faster... but I guess I like my demolition methods... lol

well, I wouldn't call myself error prone :p , but I did have a problem last night with my new 7800 GTX, and I thought I may have to use that, but I just booted with an old card, turned it down, shutdown, swapped them, and I was good.

only took 2 min to figure out

I don't think everyone read that since they are still telling you to reset the resolution. The only other thing I can think of is that your molex connector is not plugged in....
 
Perhaps your primary display is set wrong in the BIOS?

Do you have your system OC'd? Maybe for some reason a bios setting is causing an issue in the bus, not letting the card run at spec.
 
booting into safe mode worked. the monitor that my friend was using wasn't as good as mine and could not handle the refresh rate i had installed.
