OK , now I am really confused. I set the game to play at 640*480 with small textures and all options to the low end. In the nvidia control panel I have everything set to performance. STILL when I start playing the game , in the cellar ..not even outside , i get constant stuttering and though it looks like slow frame rate stutter , how can it be? I have a Pentium D 3 GHz with an NVIDIA 7800 GTX and 2 gigs of DDR2 ram..no way at 640*480 with all options down , no HDR should this be happening..this pc flys with all other games. What could it be????????????? I am wondering if its going to make a difference when I get the 7900 GTX , I bet the performance will be the same. That will suck , it HAS TO BE something weird in my pc setup..maybe its my dual core cpu?

Its not your dual core CPU. I play Oblivion no problem @ 1680x1050 on my 6800GS and Dual Xeon system. You sure you have the right drivers?

sure you have your chipset drivers installed? thats what it sounds like.

had same thing happen to me with doom3 played like a slide show... remembered that I didnt do chipset.. did those and it zoomed.

All other games FLY , Quake 4 , Doom 3 , FEAR , GRAW , BF2 , COD2...All with high quality settings in both nvidia panel and in the games options menus. Yet this one friggin game which I AM DYING TO PLAY is unplayable for me. I turned the onboard sound off , did nothing. I can't understand it at all , it constantly stutters..turn a corner in the cellar , stutter city , the rats attack , stutter , stutter , and this is at low quality graphics and perfomance settings in the control panel..

Screw it , I just ordered an ATI X1900 XT and will have it tomorrow. I will install it and see how this game runs with that card..if it runs good then I will test all my other games..if those all run as good as they do with the 7800 then I will sell the brand new 7900 GTX I have coming on ebay where I just bought it  Its only money :D

er?

Throwing money at PC problems is an expensive game, I hope you have a deep wallet. A bit of testing probably would have revealed that its just chipset drivers or audio drivers causing hastle, theres obviously something wrong since thats a decent card.

The problelm is the game, it stutters and hitches as it loads new background objects and areas as you move through the world.

You could also try setting the "Max frames to render ahead" to 0 in the classic control panel driver settings, that will get rid of the lag.

You've just been Zapped!!! :)

Spending that kind of cheddar on a problem has gotta sting, especially when it wont solve the problem. You were headed in the right direction by asking on a forum, where you went wrong was you didnt wait till you got a sufficeint answer and troubleshoot the problem.

I have a 7800 GTX and a 7900 GTX, in different rigs mind you, and all I had to do is play with the settings to get decent gameplay. Personally I thing it is still pooly coded. COD 2 plays quite well at low FPS and doenst chug like a logging truck in the mountains.

But thats just my $0.02

I totally disabled audio , made no difference..the chipset drivers are installed as if they werent I wouldnt be able to play BF2 or FEAR or Quake 4 etc at high quality both in game and in my control panel settings. And I am not worried about money but since both cards that I will sell are new I will get most of my money back. I like trying to solve pc problems anyway , its fun in a way but incredibly frustrating too...like a good adventure game where you just can't seem to solve that one puzzle but you keep coming back to it and you think about it all day long..how I long for one of those types of games again..Guys I am only doing this to finally rule out the video card angle to this problem. I can't fool with the settings to make it better..im in the damn cellar right in the beginning of the game with the king and his guards..theres no grass , no distant terrain to edit , its a small area..the stuttering is unbelieveable. And I did turn down every single option not to mention going to 640*480..but yet all my other games kick ass , fast as hell.

defrag your system. The files can get quite large and it might help a little.

firstly, u need to wake up a bit here. if every other game works great, then good for you but that means jack all. i used to do tech support for bell internet part time when i was in college and we got really tired of people with this kind of attitude. they'd tell us 'but it worked before!' and thought we could wave some magic wand or something and make it all better. well life's not like that. if you want to keep throwing money around like that, sure its yours to waste. just don't expect people to help you much if you are looking for the magic fix and aren't willing to lift a finger.

secondly, you are correct that the game should not be running that badly. there are a lot of possible reasons and they all need to be elimianted. whatever remains is your answer. simple process of elimination. so the other guys are right here. to make things happen more qucikly, i would have removed ALL drivers and installed all new ones. that way nothing is missed. i'm willing to bet that would have solved it. if not, the [H] here found in past reviews that nvidia had a small problem with oblivion. the fix was install coolbits and set max frames to render ahead to 0. that stops stuttering. i did this myself with a 7900GT and it fixed my little red wagon.

i'm sorry if i seem rude here, but i am honestly appauled that you come to a forum to ask for help and then when its given it appears to me that it was completely ignored and then you simply ditched a perfectly good high end video card. it doesn't make a lot of sense and all that has been accomplished is wasting time.

I had this same problem for some reason on my last computer. I ended up just uninstalling oblivion and giving it up. Runs fine on my new gfx card / reinstall of XP. It gets really bad when people die, right? I think it has something to do with the blood decals. Try turning that off. I don't know, I never got the problem fixed. Also, if you have ffdshow installed, check here:

BTW, my last video card was a 9600.

did you ever try settings maxed or does it do the same thing because you shouldnt have to go that low on that good a system.

I will reply to this since your making me out to be some sort of moron who didn't try anything but coming in here and asking you to solve all the problems in my world. Where did I ever say " well it worked before" ? And if you think it doesn't mean jack all that all the other games I mentioned all fly at high quality EXCEPT this game then you must not have been a very good tech. I mentioned that to show the people who were going to read my post that it MOST LIKELY isn't a video card hardware issue or driver issue as no way do most of those games work at high quality if my card is faulty or I have a driver issue. More information is good when trying to sort out something like this no?

I did all the above , I didn't just wait for people here to reply. I disabled my onboard sound , I reninstalled the drivers for the card and for my motherboards onboard sound , i tried the beta drivers for the video card , i edited the games ini files 50 times , i used that direct show filter to remove all the codecs from my pc except for the ones that originally ship with XP , i reinstalled oblivion , I fooled with all the ingame settings , I fooled with all the control panel settings , I did the coolbits regedit and fooled with the set max frames settings..trust me I didn't just post here and then waited for someone else to do the work for me.

I didn't ditch a completely good card in fact its back in my pc. I wanted to do my absolute best before giving up on this game , I used my resources to try out an XT since people say it makes oblivion run fantastic..well it didn't for me..I still got the stuttering issue. I am going to sell the card and get almost all my money back. When the other card gets here ( the 7900 GTX ) I will put that in my pc and keep it no matter what and sell my Dell 7800 GTX. I am not wasting money , I will end up paying about 240 dollars or so for a 7900 GTX when all is said and done. Don't be appauled , I tried everything I could think of and appreciate all the replys here.

If you have an M-Audio Revolution 7.1 soundcard you will get bad stuttering in the game with this sound card as I found out myself.

It happens all the time , from the moment the game starts in the jail cell..I turn around to look at the back of the cell and 1 sec freeze , then it stops.. I then move foward a few steps turn again , 1 sec freeze , then it stops..this happens all the way though the area where the rats first come out after the king leaves the prison and pretty much makes me stop playing. And it also happens when not turning , just stutter , freeze , stutter ad nauseum. I think it may be my onboard audio but I am not sure yet. It doesn't matter , im not going to go crazy with this anymore. If I have to ill just get the 360 version of the game and leave this friggin mess behind.

Problem solved , it was my onboard sound chip. It had absoultely no issues with all my other games but it screwed this game up. A nice brand new soundblaster Audigy card has fixed that problem..playing at 1280*960 with ultra high quality with barely a hitch now. Thanks again to all the replys.
