Wired has a piece this morning covering the top 11 geek achievements in special effects at the Oscars. They mention in the article that the geeks are the big money makers, but we’ve known that for years.

1940: A dozen years after it handed out its first little golden man, the Academy finally decides to recognize the guys who make movie magic. The first Oscar for special effects goes to The Rains Came, beating out a forgettable little picture called The Wizard of Oz.

I can't believe his list left out the 1951 winner for special effects "Destination Moon".

After just watching it again recently (in 1080p HD too, mind you...), I'm really kinda disappointed to realize that The Thing wasn't nominated for anything in '83... I'm assuming it was ignored for being sci-fi horror, but it was great FX for the pre-digital era... I'll admit, I'd love to see a Thing re-make... Or a... sequel!? (altho I believe both Russell and Carpenter have both been quoted as having no idea what the story was at the end of the film...) (Actually, just found links suggesting a prequel or sequel may be in the works...)

But, after seeing the noms for Poltergeist, E.T. and Bladerunner, I guess I'd have to watch them again...

I like all four films, and while Poltergeist did have some good FX, and the more I think the more I rem BR had some moments (hell, the FX in BR were better than in Total Recall some eight yrs later... same guy BTW), what were the FX moments in E.T. that stood out?

But Thing caused me some sleepless nights... Hell, watching it again last weekend late night in 1080p, I had to pause it and take a break and decide if I should just wait 'til morning to finish it... It's still creepy!

If it's the sci-fi horror deal tho, I'd think Poltergeist falls in the same category, irregardless of the Spielberg connection...

Eh, Rob Bottin's still a winner in my book... Thing is just unforgettable...
