Apple users can finally celebrate a victory over their PC brethren. Mac OS X is beating both Windows and Vista combined by a ratio of ten to one…in critical vulnerabilities found during 2007.

While Mac OS X had 234 highly critical vulnerabilities reported in 2007, Vista and XP combined had 23, Ou wrote. "This shows that Apple had more than five times the number of flaws per month than Windows XP and Vista in 2007, and most of these flaws are serious," wrote Ou. "Clearly this goes against conventional wisdom."

LOL

I started to read heading, got the middle was about to quit. Then i read the end... I busted up laughing LOL

I thought it was going to some bias review or somthing like that.. Oh the laughter LOL

Wow... People that actually argue over Operating systems... Need to pick up a sport. Seriously

I'm such a dick.

To be honest, all of our Mac guys here are cool, and I honestly cringe when news like this comes out because the PC guy in me is laughing my ass off but, at the same time, I do have compassion for OUR Mac guys (not the average Mac user)....

....but yeah, I'm pretty much a dick. :D

Thank you steve! Was going to be a slow day untill this post!

stupid way to rate the stability/security of a system

for starters MS are know for not patching flaws so how does counting updates prove how secure a systemis?

I would say more patch's the better myself

PERSONAL ATTACK ;)

Hopefully this stop their very annoying and uneffective commercials...

Seriously. That stuff is so childish and offers no explanation on why OSX/Mac is better than MS counterparts. If anything Apple aims to please the easily pleasible.

I think that no matter how this info is published, someone wont like it.
Im glad they posted their findings on flaws found and the rating of the flaws.
Useful info.

Oh look, here's another one in denial! Yeah I'm pretty sure your logic is... what are the words I'm looking for... DEAD WRONG! hahaha

exactly, I use a mac for testing and leisure purposes, but honestly I have not use of a mac except for the people who use them.

I do my work on my MacBook Pro, game on my Vista box

BTW, I had a dream last night that I got banned from [H] for saying something too Gen[M]ayish

Haha, nice.

Oh yeah, Steve, "Windows" does not automatically mean XP like you imply in your brief summary.

Windows and Vista combined by a ratio of ten to one

That makes it worse.

Taking 2 OS's and putting it agaist 1 OS and that 1 OS has a 10 to 1 ratio for being more FLAWED than the 2 other OS's is funny LOL

heheh read that sentence 5 times fast :D

This is such a stupid comparison. I ALWAYS have to make this argument. LESS than 10x the amount of computer users use mac.... Why would hackers target a small niche percentage of total people? It's 10 times less people.. a waste of time to target them.

I played a sport for 10 years and need three surgeries because of it. Making fun of Macs is much safer. ;)

Counting security holes is a bad way to gauge the security of an OS?

BTW, it was Apple that left some gaping holes in Java unpatched for 6 months.

It's not a waste of time. It's to prove that it can be done, and that it can be done with GREAT ease.

If the mac gets this much crap at the 5% mark. Then what will it get when it reaches 10%? (if they can get past 5% first)

Either way, Macs will be targeted just like PC's and Linux boxes. It's not cause it's a waste of time, it's a matter of a epenis, and the "I did it, can you do it?" question.

OSX doesn't have a large enough user base to be the focus of exploit, but that will change. Give it time.

So I guess that means Firefox sucks major ass because they fixed more bugs than Microsoft for Internet Explorer.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

It does...it's big enough to cause this big of an uproar.. why is it not big enough to make mac machines, zombies?? hehe.

It would so fit the Mac Zealot. Mac Zombine, with Mac Zealots behind the mouse, unaware that there machine has been zombiemified, and is causing mass destruction among all living creatures in the world...:D

Oh no... Firefox FIXED (notice the KEY word "FIXED") there flaws.

Apple lets them sit for 6 months before anything gets done.

I was implying its not big enough for exploiters to focus on. The user base is just too small compared to Windows.

This is pretty funny. However, how many of you really have been hacked or comprimised in one of these "exploits"? That's what I thought so it really doesn't matter.

So part of the logic of that article is, as long as there are no exploits in the wild that attack those particular security holes......then there really is no problem......

hmmmm.....I now know that there are 200+ weaknesses.......time to start coding.....:D

That's basically the only reason why it's more "Secure." Thing is if they ever got as popular, they'd be just as attacked.

Macs are pretty good but my thing has always been the stuck up attitude Mac and Mac people typically have.

Here we go again with Steve revving up the ignorant masses.

Huge portions of OS X are "open source" code. Python, perl, cups, etc. etc. - code it shares with Linux, Solaris, etc.

"Open source" code has more patches because it has literally millions of people looking at the code and discussing it publicly and finding its flaws.

Microsoft code is closed.
The only flaws you hear about are ones that Microsoft chooses to let you and the world know about.

If you've ever coded you know that something as complex as a modern OS is going to have lots of flaws. Microsoft documenting and fixing so few should be a source of concern, not cocky self-delusion. Something like 90% of all windoze machines are zombies without the owners knowledge. That's a far more important metric.

1) The majority of security flaws are discovered by third parties.

2) There are a lot more people looking for holes in Windows than OSX, yet OSX still has 10 times the number of documented security holes that Windows does.

3) 90% of Windows-based PC's are zombies? Precisely what are you on?

Really??! so you say 90% of all Windows machines are zombies? Oh, I am sorry, I forgot its now trendy to say Windoze...

Care to back up your ass-tastic stats there with some actual facts!

But how many Mac users are fully aware of their system being compromised? And how many Mac users seriously look at the code of OSX and contribute to it being a better product?
