Is it possible for me to designate my main hard drive as just the boot drive and OS ONLY and have my slave drive run all my programs including firewall, virus, etc?

Thanks folks!

:)

Thats exactly what i've been doing for years on my systems.
You just have to get yourself used to paying attention to the apps you install to make sur you designate the D:/ drive for the install

That's it?! Sounds too easy to be true. Will my boot drive become more stable and boot faster?

Thanks!!

Nope!
Its pretty simple. When you set your primary drive it'll become the C:/ drive when you install windows and anything after that will follow with the next letter in line being the D, E, F whatever depending on how many drives you have.

Nope meaning nothing special except pay attention after the install which drive letter is assigned to the other HD. D might be designated to a CDrom.

Can you describe the benefits of doing this? My current problem is that I use so many programs that it seems that my OS becomes unstable after some time, then strange things begin to happen. I'm using XP pro.

I'm looking for a way, that if I have to reload my OS, then I don't wipe out all of my programs in the process, because they will be on a separate drive. It's a pain in the ars to reload all of the software I use!

Do you think this will help????

Thanks again! :D

I do it for ease of reinstallation of windows in case of a problem. You will lose the shortcuts to the apps and possibly may have to reinstall a couple but not all. Th efirst thing i do is run the app by clicking it's .exe file and see if it runs fine. If so then i create a new shortcut for it and place it on my quicklaunch bar. If not then it has to be reinstalled. I guessing 75% of my programs never needed reinstallation.
Another reason is I have always believed that by keeping windows by itself at the beginning of the drive it wil run faster and smoother. At the edge of the drive files are accessed faster. Also if only windows is on that drive then it may take less time to search for less files to run windows.

Most of this is my opinion though.

I install windows and my apps on a seperate partition, but I haven't really thought about seperatings my apps and os.

Just thinking about it, it seems like a bad idea - a lot of programs make changes to the registry, and reinstalling the os would of course, delete that and may lead to problems with those programs later?

Not sure, but I don't think seperating the os and apps would be much more improvement over just seperating them from everything else.

The changes to the registry and other things are major considerations, and reason why i don't bother to install programs to another drive or partition.

While some programs may still work with their registry entries deleted (the entire quake series, for example) but its just not a good idea...you will lose major functionality with software suites such as microsoft office and norton systemworks, just to name a few.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. And I don't think there would be much benefit to it, even if it did work.

I really like my setup:

10GB partition on 74GB Raptor for os/apps
the rest of it for whatever

(2) 200GB drives in RAID 1 for storage

I have a 40gb C:, of which I am using 19gigs, and this is at least 6 months since last reformat (I can't remember to be honest).

I install everything to C:, and save everything else (data, mp3's, etc) to a separate partition. I'm really happy with it. Ever since I used O&O defrag, the system seems to boot faster also :)

I tried the 5gb C: and everything else on D: but I just didn't feel comfortable with it for some reason. I don't think it's a bad idea though. I might try it again someday.
