Well due to the insane prices goign up here in aus, I am building a new rig tomorrow for my brother, giving him my e6750, my question is do i get a dual or quad, i know most people say, well it depends, but i dont want that, here are the facts,
-I play games
-I re-encode .avi's to dvd (convert-x2dvd) (a fair bit for me and the lady to watch)
-I want some sort of knowloedge this build will last, even though i will probably upgrade mid to late next year.
I am not scared to overclock at all.
-Intel
Sorry if this is coming across as rude, just stressing becausei really need to order tomorrow morning first thing, the ($%^%$) American economy has raped us and hardware prices in aus. heres some more info so far,

I am getting a GTX260(216sp) and a new processor (help me decide)
and i am also getting him,
Ip35E
(my) e6750
(my) 8800GTX
4 gig of corsair ram (just the xms2)
2 dvd burners
a 250 seagate drive, (also gunna give him a 400 when i get it back from RA)
an antec 300 case
and 550W "Gigabyte" Superb Power Supply
think that is everything,

what are your thought, any help is welcome, remember i am in aus (often forgotten) again please dont think i am ungrateful or rude, just in panic mode, (my bro really needs a new pc and they dont have too much money so i am heloing em out)

Get the Q6600. It's a quad-core that can easily overclock to around 3GHz (or higher) with good air cooling. It's dropped in price to the point that (in the US) it costs about as much as a high-end dual core processor (the E8-series). All you need is some DDR2 800 RAM (plus a decent CPU cooler like the OCZ Vendetta 2) and you're set.

Is there anything else you need help with?

thansk that helps alot, i have a TRUE so cooling will be fine, ill just get the quad then i think. my only concern was that it was older, and didnt have sse4, is that not important?

Hmm... The 8800 GTX doesn't have is older, doesn't have 1GB of memory, has only 384-bit bandwidth... but is still heavily sought after (rightfully so) for its graphics power for resolutions under 1900 x 1200... and sometimes, even at that resolution, the 8800 GTX is used, particularly in SLI.

Your logic doesn't work.

Q6600 is still a very solid CPU that can overclock well and that will continue to be relevant to the CPU market for a long time.

No, this is not a rant, I just like taking apart people's reasonings. No, if this is insulting, I don't mean it to be.

SSE4.1 is important if the apps you use make use of it. Otherwise, it won't make a difference. If they do, and your CPU doesn't support it, IIRC, there's only a 10% performance hit compared to a chip with SSE4.1.

Your logic doesn't work.

Who's/which/what logic are you referring to?

This part:

(Correct me if I'm wrong, but) Alai doesn't understand why the OP (carnag3) is giving his brother his old 8800GTX and is buying the GTX 260 in its place.

My first response was to find some benchmarks comparing the GTX 260 and the 8800GTX, but there is a point that could be made in Alai's favor. If neither carnag3 nor his brother are going to be gaming at a resolution of at least 1680x1050, it may make better sense to just get a(n) 8800/9800GT or the 9800GTX.

... But what do I know? (Help us out here, carnag3!)

Lol, that too. But I was more referring to how he referred to Q6600 as 'old technology' and it's lack of a rather extraneous feature.

Oh. Now it all makes sense.

(Funny how the OP didn't really ask for a second opinion, huh?)

I agree with going Quad core especially since they have dropped so much in price. I have the 8800gt and the C2D E6550 and my cpu is the only part that lags. I borrowed the Q6600 from work(worked at a pc repair shop) and played around with it and I noticed a big difference in gaming. More games are becoming multi-threaded to take advantage of all 4 cores so trust me and go with the quad.
