Just placed order for new system.

Its gonna be running Vista 64 Home Premium

What is the best Internet Security software to get?

Ill need something for both Virus and Spyware/Malware
Not sure if you can get one thing to do it all.
Ive always just got the free internet stuff before, but wanted to do it right this time.

LMK guys

Squirrel

Kaspersky or Esets ESS.

NOD32 is Esets plain antivirus product, not their full security suite..which is called ESS...which would be what you want since you said security suite.

you dont need a security suite, just get behind a normal nat router, and add nod32 antivirus.

all security suites do is bog down system.

Squirrel, I've been using x64, and my system is pretty damn near bulletproof. This is what I'm running:

SuperAntiSpyware pro - $20 for a lifetime license
Avira Antivir Free
Windows Defender with Spynet Advanced for HIPS
WinPatrol Free

Avira has THE best detection rates around, and it's free.

If you don't have a router and/or want a software firewall for the outbound protection, Rising Firewall is free, light, and does a good job.

You're missing hijackthis, spyware blaster, spyware guard and maybe that malwarebytes program.

Yo,

The best antivirus out there that i have used is Avast! its awesome and free with registration. For a free tool is uses little resources and protects you against everything with no annoying crap.

Yeah, I forgot Sypwareblaster. Since I only update it once every 2-3 weeks or so, it slipped my mind.

Malwarebytes Anti-malware I skipped over for him, since it can't run on demand on x64, and SuperAntiSpyware is just as good if not better (and cheaper).

Personally I feel that a majority of that the anti-malware is really unneeded and really just rapes resources.

In my experience (take it for what it's worth) I found that a combination of

Vista x64(UAC and Defender on) + NAT Firewall + NOD32 (Substitute in Kaspersky or or you want free Avira AntiVir) = Good to go. (If you really want a total package go with Eset's ESS, I deploy it at friends and familys homes, where they have younger kids who like to contract everything... damn you Limewire... damn you.

All three options on the antivirus are lightweight and ranked towards the top time and time again. I

ah, didnt know about the 64bit thing. It would be interesting to see a comparison of the two.

Generally, I agree. However, I SERIOUSLY dislike ESS, and Kaspersky has given me nothing but problems on my system. This is version 6, 7, AND 8, so...I went with Avira paid. if I had to do it all over again, I'd stick with the free version.

Defender is kind of crappy, and can't stop 0 day stuff. You HAVE TO remember to enable SpyNet Advanced in the defender optionsthough, or it's 100% useless. SuperAntiSpyware is so invaluable because it has the daily updates, the near 100% detection rates, and also a VERY powerful cleaning tool.

Winpatrol I keep around, because it does nothing but alert me when a new startup program is added. No CPU cycles, 2MB of ram eaten up, it's a nice little security blanket, and it's SO worth it. Especially if you game online (WoW for instance) and have to worry about keyloggers.

I'm using the latest avira premium, no complaints.

I'd like superantispyware more if the interface wasn't so horrid.

Is that a default setting?

Also it's rocking 11MB right now. Not a big difference but worth noting.

You don't have to worry about key loggers in WoW unless your installing some unknown add-ons.

ESET NOD32 is what I recommend, or ESET Smart Security if you want firewall, antispam, and antivirus.

Yah, some of them bog down your system quite a bit. SuperAntispyware, while it's a great removal tool..it bogs down your browser like a slug. Takes a long time to load also...whenever you boot up, log in..takes a bit to plop in your system tray.

Spybot S&D without teatimer load nothing, if you only use it to update and immunize, it only puts bad sites in your blocked zones of the browser, as well as adds bad sites to your hosts file. So no system impact with it.

SpywareBlaster also doesn't bog the system at all, similar to Spybot, also just adds protection from known browser plugins....blocks them from being installed.

For me, I just run NOD32 2.7, use Firefox, and I'm behind a NAT firewall all the time.

Just have good surfing habits, plus watch what you download along with having good firewall rules.

I don't have any anti-virus or malware program install :)

BUT when I did, I used Nod32

I run NOD32 AV, leave windows firewall enabled, use firefox for browsing and my 'puters sit behind an Untangle UTM box. I have the Untangle scan all web traffic for malware/viruses/etc.

For friends and family I make them run SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot for the immunizations, firefox, Avira Free, windows firewall. Then I also make sure they run a good hardware firewall. Some of them I have setup decent P3 boxes running Astaro Home license for the firewall.
