I know the feelings from most about buying computers from Dell and other places like that isn't a good one, but just pretend this is a home built computer and tell me what you think.

Pentium 4 3.2GHz Processor
1GB DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz 2x512 Dual Channel
160GB NCQ SATA 7200 RPM Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce 6800 256MB 16x PCI-Express Video Card
SB Audigy 2 ZS SC W/IEEE1394
16x DVD-ROM
16x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer
17" Dell Ultrasharp Flat Panel Display
Dell 5.1 Surround Sound System With Subwoofer
Microsoft Windows XP Media Edition
Media Edition Plus
Other Software

I have been wanting to build my own computer, but the finances wouldn't allow it. My wife's work got us a 12% discount to go along with the discounts that Dell already was offering. We charged the computer and they will cut us a check to pay it back off and then we just have about $30 every 2 weeks come out of her check for 2 years. They would only do this if you bought from a retailer and wouldn't allow you to build your own. They think that people will buy the parts cheap and build a computer to sell for more and make profit off of it. The next time I get a computer, I will do a build. This should get me through a couple of years. So what do you all think of this system? It will be used for video editing, surfing the web, and a little bit of high end gaming. Not enough to warrant a more expensive video card though.

Well, it's still a Dell, no thanks. You say you must buy from a retailer, does it have to be Dell? Why not put together a semi-custom config (you choose the parts and they put it together) like you can get with cyberpower.com or ibuypower.com or even alienware or voodoo. At least that way, you aren't stuck with a Dell and have a upgradeable case, power supply, motherboard, OC options, etc... Just my opinion, I buy Dells by the hundreds for work but I'd never consider one for my home PC.

The hard drive's either a Seagate or Western Digital, so while you probaly overpaid for it, at least you're getting a decent one.

Dell uses cheap generic optical drives. You overpaid for those DVDs, and good luck to you. Just use them till they break; DVD-RWs are getting constantly cheaper.

You didn't say WHICH 17" LCD you got. Hope it wasn't the 25ms one or your games will look like old silent movies.

The monitor is the 1704FPT. This one says that it gets 13 ms typical reponse time. So that should be pretty good then right?
