I have heard too many damn things about which is better, so I want to know the fact on which is better once and for all...

when my MX510 comes next week.... should i USB... or PS2 it?

Whatever you want to do.

Personally I'd go USB.

Edit: Or whatever you decide works best. Try them both.
 
I use PS2, but that's because I don't have to do extra work in Linux to get it working (yes, I am THAT lazy).

Regularly, I just recommend USB because it's hotpluggable; but whichever port you want to use up is up to you. If you don't have enough USB ports, use the USB->PS/2 converter. But whatever.
 
I use USB because then I can unplug it while the computer is on, and I can do the same in our laptop.
 
I've heard that using USB gives your mouse a faster response time, which is good if you're playing first-person shooters. I've also heard that using USB takes up more processor power.
Honestly, I can't tell a difference in response time nor do I see any slowdown in games when I use USB. But I use USB because, yeah, it's plug and play.
 
Try them both and see which one you like better. With most of the mice I have used, I think the USB connection feels smoother than PS2.
 
PS2. You might as well. There is no real difference between the two, and you probably have some other use for the USB. Or at least some other potential use for them. There is absolutely nothing you would ever need the PS2 port for except the mouse, so you might as well use it for that. You'd feel like an idiot if you ever need to unplug a USB device or buy a hub because your mouse is USB rather than PS2.
 
I use USB for two reason...one is so I don't have to mess with the ps2 connector and have something else sitting behind my comp, and two is because like the above posters said, you can remove it at any time if you need/want to and it won't require a restart. I have 8 usb ports so there's absolutely no way I'll ever need to switch to ps2 in order to save usb slots. If you only have 2 usb slots or something, I might consider ps2.
 
Honestly, you can't ever tell a difference in normal usage between USB and PS2. I typically tend to use PS2 just to keep my USB ports free. Nothing else will use the PS2 ports, so I might as well stick my mouse there.
 
No gamers here then, obviously.

PS2... and set the mouserate to 200Hz manually in XP, from device manager.

Ditto. And the 200Hz refresh rate with PS/2 is always nice.
 
125Hz is good enough for me :) I have a logitech optical usb... not one of those fancy ones. Thinking of switching to a MX310 though.

If it's USB... and you need to put a USB->PS2 connector on it, wouldn't it just be as fast as a USB mouse? Because it's designed as a USB mouse.... the bandwidth would just be "capped" at the converter, no?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm just speculating :)
 
nah...it doesnt matter at all. whichever plug you want to plug in is fine. i plug into USB because i have alot free usb ports and i also plug in my old compaq mouse into ps2 so i have 2 mouses.
 
I'm guessing the "sample rate" is the Hz setting...interesting...

in win xp I can unplug and plug the ps2 mouse in all day...

Keep hotswapping the PS2 mouse. I've seen people blow out their motherboard doing that. It may work for you 100 times, but then again the 101st time may send a killing surge through the motherboard and fry it out. PS2 Keyboards and mice should only be unplugged/plugged in with the machine off.
 
it has alrready been mentioned. Use PS2 if you need to save a USB port for something else. Other than that, there really isn't much difference and you won't notice much either.
