do they move around like orbital sanders? what do they do differently then regular jigsaws? should i buy one?

In an orbital jigsaw, the blade moves forward a bit on the up(cut) stroke, and back a bit on the downstroke. This allows for faster cutting as well as better clearing of sawdust(more important on thicker pieces). The cuts sometimes aren't as clean, though. It's certainly not a necessity, but it is a nice feature.

I just got a corded black and decker jig saw that has a selector where you can choose orbital or non orbital and then "360" where you can spin the blade 360 degrees for super tight curves where you cant' turn the whole jigsaw around it. I have yet to use it but it's a pretty sweet looking setup.

Too bad I'm buying a house and will be modding on a "larger" scale, i.e. basement

"Too bad"!? That's the BEST MODDING PROJECT possible! Be grateful you have a basement to "mod"...
