So, my friends and I are planning a Halloween LAN Party, and a thought bubbled up in me: that we could wire orange cathodes in our computers to just add to the Halloween spirit.

But one possible problem--these cathodes' existence. Do they?

they do but they are extremely hard to find. your best bet it so find a faded red CC or wire some orange or "amber" led's up.to your ps. it would look cool.

I swear the red ones that are supposedly "real red" are really just red/orange....with a bigger emphasis on orange. So might as well make it easy one yourself and just get one of the ones marked as red.

bump for someone in connecticut. and I bought a red one and it was more orange then red.

dont know if it is much help but streetglow makes orange neon...not ccfl but for a one night stand it works...i used to use one in my pc like 4 years ago before ccfls were mass marketed...it worked great and not really that hot.....have a good day

In my searching I found a few people who said the Red CC's CompUSA sells are actually orange. One person described them as "a lame attempt at red".

yea, i was going to suggest some red cathodes because some are orange looking...iirc some cathodes on newegg have reviews saying that they look orange instead of red

if you lower the frequency of the red cold cathode you can turn it orange. you just have to change 1 resisor on the inverter board

Wow, that's actually a damn good idea. I'll have to look into that. Thanks.

Sunbeam makes a "red" CCFL that glows orange. You know you have the right one if the thin neon tube inside is orange instead of the usual white.

I know this because before I knew better, I ordered some 12" and some 4" 'red' CCFLs in the same order, and they shipped me 12" Sunbeams along with 4" other brandname I can't remember which glowed pink... I was mad cuz I couldnt use both together on the same project due to the different glow.
