ok i need some help, i cant overslock more than 10% in windows with out it wigging out and crashing, in the bios i can get it to 2.4 and thats it. all i want is 2.6 stable thats all, any pointers on voltage, multipliers, FSB that you guys successfully OC to. i think it might be the ram but PLEASE help me out

My setup

opteron 165 CCBBE steppings
A8N-SLI Deluxe
corsair XMS 3200 2-2-2-5
coolermaster Aquagate water cooling( not the best i know but its better than air)
BFG 650w PSU
2x7900gs

Well, I'm going to assume your RAM is not running at 2-2-2-5 at 267MHz because that would be sick. You're either using a divider or you loosened the timings. If you haven't done those, I would try that. Use the divider that puts your RAM closest to 200MHz because, with the on-board memory controller, dividers don't really hinder performance.

What are your load temps, too?

I'm with alex41290 on this one, you really should lower ram divider, 267mhz with so tight latecys whould be sick. and you allso could pump up the voltage for your ram too to gain some extra speed.(I dont know if your allso doing so)
are your using clockgen ? if not, you might want to to try that, its a really nice tool to overclock your cpu and ram from windows,
here's a link for ya ClockGen

as mentioned above, check your ram divider. also make sure you got all your locks in place (pci, etc).

1.5v is a lot. i have the regular a8n-sli board and i can hit 2.7 ghz stable at 1.3v with air cooling.

1.5 actually is not bad for an Opty, I'm at 2.8Ghz at 1.5V with my 148 which came stock at 2.2.

I'm with everyone else on this one too. Your RAM is way to tight to be running that high. Though it is nice, try running PI at 1M with what you have now and then try adding a divider and get to 2.6 and run it again. Then regardless of what the number you want your processor to be. Take the one that performs better. Something tells me that the higher RAM with tighter timings will perform better but thats just a guess...

260 x 10
1.45v - 1.5v

DDR 333 (aka the 5:6 divider or the 166mhz divider)

Timings to 2.5-4-4-7

If that's stable, try decreasing the memory Timings to 2.5-3-3-7.

165 is 9x :)

oh man ok after a long process of trying one thing after another i alomst gave up but around 4 in the morning( when my brain works best i think) i decided to take a ram stick out and just try it with 1. tada, didnt boot up at all, then tried the other stick, boom! posted. it seems that 1 stick is not taking well to being overclocked.

long story short im going to RMA the ram to get some new stuff and as of now i am running my opty @2.9 stable 1.5v multi is 9x and the ram wont let me go past that but i dont have an uber WC system so 2.8 is good for me

my idle temps are anywhere from 37-42 and load is 48-53, im thinking this is hot please lt me know

thanks for the input

^^ no, AMD processors are capped.

As for temps, those are a little high for water cooling. I'm on air cooling at about the same settings as you with my 148 and im idling at 32C and load at 45C...might want to work on that one ;)

i remebered i used the cheap coolermaster compound that came with my system cuz i couldnt find my AS5 anywhere but NOW i found it after the fact, if i decreased my voltage down lets say to 1.3-1.4 would that help the temps alot or a little?

on a side note i have a 4000+ san diego running at 2.7 and it is at 34 idle and only 41-42 under load, im using a zalman 9500, do those temps sound about right?

And you place locks how?

I believe he is refering to locking your PCIe bus speed to 100mhz and the PCI bus speed to 33.3mhz. If they are set to something like auto, then make sure you manually tell it what to run at otherwise it may flucuate cuasing the OC to suffer.

yep :)

Opty 146 1.5v@2.9ghz on air cooling. I didn't have to do anything special except lower the memory speed, as my Corsair XMS couldn't handle that huge overclock.

I have the same problem. However, I am running a 1:1 ratio and am achieving stable at 2.8 Which personally I am happy with. I was running it at 2.9 with a 9:10 ratio however, if i remember correctly my PI score is better this way than it was with the 9:10 ratio because the RAM is right now running at 253Mhz.

Nice mem overclock! Mine craps out at around 236-241, depending on ambient temp. Haven't tried raising the voltage yet, but I'll try that the next time I get the OC bug. :)

After posting that, I was actually curious to see how far i could push it :)

turns out that it could only get up to 256 (im by no means complaining) with the 2.7V i was putting into it. Now though, i lowered it to a 9:10 ratio and I am stable at 2.9 once again with my RAM running around 245 back down to 2.6V.
