Ok, so I'm looking to do some upgrading of my 939 rig.

Now I can get a 165 from newegg for about $100. I have no idea what to expect in terms of ocability / stepping of the chip. I'm going to guess 2.6-2.7 will be the low end of what I can really expect out of it?

Now I could also go buy a used one and have a pretty good idea of where the chip will max out. However those chips seem to cost a fair bit more depending on where they max out. And well I don't know what kind of abuse may have been done to them while the other person had them like going crazy with voltages or whatnot.

So which would you guys recommend to get? Price / Performance is really what I'm interested in I suppose. 3GHz would be nice, but not worth $175 to know I'll get it, ya know?

Personally, I kinda find OCing a new CPU to be pretty fun. :D It is an art and a science in one and I enjoy the challenge. If it were me, I'd save the money and just buy a new one to see how lucky I get. The reports on the current shipping chips seems to be pretty good but they do need some voltage to get stable at higher clocks.

But really, it depends what it is that you want to do with the CPU though. If you're gaming then the 2.6 - 2.7GHz mark is about as good as it gets for most games with the Opterons. Anymore (and maybe a little less) won't necessarily make or break your gaming experience. If you're looking to run benchmarks or very heavy CPU intensive applications then the higher the clock speed, the better. And that's where the price premium for tried and tested chips come in. ;)

the average for opty's are 2.6-2.8...theres a select few who can do better than 3.0 and theres also a select few who cant break 2.6 and end up residing at 2.4, then theres the EXTREMELY lucky who can UNDERvolt and hit 2.9 (utterly crazy)

if tankguys sells opty's still i would buy it from them, but buying from newegg is a crapshoot
