optorite dd0401 problem - drive not reading discs

As of yesterday, my optorite dd0401 dvd-rw burner is not reading any discs whatsoever. The drive was working perfectly fine before that. Yesterday, a friend needed to transfer some stuff from his hard drive over to my computer, so I shut down, unplugged my optical drives, and hooked the secondary ide cable/master port up to his hard drive. Started up the comp, transferred stuff over, then shut down the computer and unplugged his drive. Now however, after I plugged my drive back in, the drive suddenly doesn't do anything. It is detected in the bios, and when I attempt to update firmware it can read the firmware and upgrade fine. It seems kind of fishy that the drive suddenly died...since it sounds like a laser problem if anything, especially since I did not even physically remove the drive from my system. Just unplugged the cable (while the computer was powered down, grounded, and unplugged).

I tried switching cables - but didn't work. I am not sure what is wrong...

The hard drive was plugged in on the same port as the optorite is in (master port on secondary IDE), so could it be that the hard drive somehow tripped some cable option thats messing up the drive? Like UDMA, PIO mode or something like that? (I really don't have much experience in this area so I don't really know what I'm talking about).

Also, the other drive on this cable, an OEM no name 16x dvd-rom, is working fine still. So the secondary IDE port on the MB is still working. I also tried plugging the optorite in as the only device, w/o the 16x dvdrom, but still didn't work.

Anyway, let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I really don't wanna go through the warranty hassle. This drive is fairly new, xmas time. Thanks

Kevin

what does it say in the device manager(rightclick on mycomputer icon----properties----hardware----devicemanager-----cd/dvd drives.....assuming you are using WINXP).

Try the trouble shooting, or just go to the driver section and uninstall the entire drive, not just the driver....then reboot. I had to do that with my Plextor.

Device manager correctly lists my device as the Optorite DD0401 DVD/RW Burner. I tried uninstalling the entire drive and rebooting. I also tried completely removing the secondary IDE channel as well, but to no avail.

I think the drive might be dead...or something with the laser. I put the drive in another computer, a Dell 600mhz, and the bios and windows of that computer both correctly recognized the drive. The drive still didn't read any cds. I didn't even bother trying write since it obviously wouldn't work.

Another thing - this whole time I thought it was a driver issue, however, I realized that the drive wasnt even working if I tried to boot from it, which should be independent of windows configuration, right?

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Otherwise I'm gonna have to go through warranty I suppose.

Thanks,
Kevin

mine jsut did the same thing.. except.. it does work with DVDs and DVD media.. can you check and see if yours does?

I just tried the drive in another computer and it does in fact read DVDs. I have not tried writing DVDs but I would guess it would write also. Still doesn't recognize any cds.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've filled out the RMA form so I'm ready to send it back, unless anyone has a suggestion. I'm pretty sure its either firmware or the hardware itself, since I've tried it in two different computers with the same results. It might not even be firmware either because I updaetd the firmware after the problem to try to fix it, and the update completed successfully, and it still doesn't work.

Thanks,
Kevin
