Optirite 52X CDRW - dead?

For about a month now my Optirite drive that I bout about a year ago does work anymore. Whenever I insert a disc, to be written or read, windows says the device isn't ready. I've switched IDE cables to no avail. Are there any common problems with these drives? Thanks.
 
have you tried looking at the manufacture's website for firmware updates?

if so, i think your drive is a goner
