Options for RF remotes?

Hi everyone, I'm looking to get a RF (Radio Frequency) remote for my HTPC, I also wouldn't be opposed to a bluetooth one, but I would rather avoid the hassle of pairing. The only RF remote I've found is the Gyration remotes and one from X10, the X10 remote is pretty fugly, and while the Gyration remote is bigger than what I want (I don't need numbers, or an IR transmitter built in, or a gyroscope, basically I just want 4 arrow keys, an okay button and a menu button) it looks pretty functional, if expensive.

Are there any other options out there to look at?

depending on your setup I love my logitech 890 RF remote....

i use mine with the normal MCE IR receiver.

If you have any other equipment: AVR or STB this is a much better solution as you only have 1 remote.

$150 for the 890 RF
 
Thanks, I may end up having to go that route. Are there any more simple remotes, however? All I really need is a 6 button remote, like the classic Apple Remote. 4 arrow keys, an okay button, and a menu button would be great, I could set it up how I like with Girder or Intelliremote.
 
Not a lot of RF remotes out there.

Also, dont know your setup, but 6 buttons seems way limiting, really for $50 the dell remote isn't perfect but pretty good as a htpc remote as it includes the mouse function as well.

Make sure you get the cx071 version; i believe the others dont come with the RF receiver. They made 3 versions and the other 2 had an internal usb emitter that isnt usually included with the remote but the CX071 has a mini usb plug.

I've got the MCE version of that one (it lacks the LCD thing) and I love it. Would recommend. :)

I'm a bit of a compulsive minimalist, and to be honest, anything over about 6 buttons is borderline repulsive to me. I don't think 6 buttons is limiting - infact, I think it is just about perfect. My original idea of using an Apple Remote was (I think) fantastic, but the line of sight problem is a big issue with the placement of my new HTPC. I'll probably end up having to suck it up and bear with some gigantic burdensome beast, but I would vastly prefer something more attractive. The Boxxee remote is much closer to what I would like, but again, infrared. ;)

Wait. Is this just for an HTPC? If so, why not just get a 360 controller and use something like Xpadder with an MCE compatible profile? If you just need a few buttons then that would be a pretty good solution, I loved it when I tried it.

Yes, it would be solely for HTPC use. I considered getting a PS3 controller (I do play some classics that would benefit from this), but I was unimpressed with the lack of replaceable batteries.

The 360 controller seems like a decent idea, I'm sure I could hide it when it is not in use, now I just need to look for one of the '360 for Windows' packages. Thanks for the assistance!
 
All you need is to pick up a cheap 360 wireless controller and MS's 360 PC reciever thingy. The "360 for Windows" stuff isn't anything more then a repackaged 360 controller with a driver disc (and Windows will DL the drivers for you anyways).
 
Will that Dell CX071 also control other components? TV and STB?

Yes it can control 4 things, but it is more limited than a harmony.
e.g. no volume punch through on HTPC mode for receiver, but this can be worked around with eventghost. I dont really use any mode but HTPC, with eventghost for receiver volume, so cant really comment on ease of use for other purposes.
 
I have the gyration gyr4101ckus (air music remote + keyboard) version, and its great. I got it for like $35 after rebate during black friday. I control my panasonic receiver, mitsubishi tv, and htpc easily. The computer is controlled through RF while the other components are through IR. I was initially going to get the dell, but gyration has been offering $40-50MIRs on them for the past 3 months. It might be over now though. It is way better than the Harmony 550 I was using before.

To the OP: You might try searching for presentation remotes, like the ones they use for powerpoint presentations.

I thought that the 360 for Windows package included a wireless adapter, silly me. I can't find the receiver at any local store that sells the controllers though... any idea what product name I should search for?
