Optimus technology for the desktop?

Could NVIDIA make Optimous technology work with the desktop and normal motherboards? Like you have an onboard graphics card that is extremely low power or the new GPU's that are integrated into the intel chips and when you are not gaming your main power hungry video card is completely turned off? If they could do this it would probably save a lot of power.
 
That would be interesting, but IIRC Optimus is for switching from an onboard Nvidia GPU (9400M-ish) to a discrete Nvidia GPU, not from Intel graphics.

Yeah i know but they could create a motherboard chipset that would support it.
 
If Nvidia actually still made desktop chipsets, then maybe. I believe both Nvidia and AMD already have some sort of manual switch in their chipsets to go from the integrated chipset graphics to the dedicated video card.

Maybe AMD will have this automatic switching feature in the RD890 chipset?
