Optimal HD position?

HD can be placed on any side, but what is the optimal position? Someone said upside down because then the heat rises faster, rather than having the heat produced by the HD rise underneath it and make its way to the top?

Most of the heat produced by the drive is out the sides, where the manufacturers expect the drive will be attached to the case, which can act as a heatsink. Upside down versus right side up shouldn't matter much as long as you've got a fan blowing over the drive.

What about those rubber shock things in the antec case. They prevent the hd from contacting the case.

Are these silly rubber things worth using?

depends what you'd like to achieve.

Yes but those cases normally have fans concentrating on those hard drive areas.

There is no real way to mount a hard drive the right way, as long as you got air movement you are good to go.

Those actually reduce the noise the drive would make because the drive's movement is being dampered.

How much airflow do the hard drives need? I have 3 packed pretty close together, but there is a fan blowing on them. They feel warm to the touch, but are much better then when I had forgot to hook the fan up for the first day.

As long as they're sitting in front of a fan bringing in cool air, like a typical 80mm fan or larger in the front of most cases, you'll be fine. With three drives together, I'd certainly make sure the fan is always properly working.

Well, nowadays more cases are coming out screwless, and my HD rack is aluminum, but toolless, it has plastic rails that you slide the HD into, so my HD racks cant act as a heatsink unfortunately.
