I'm trying to configure the gigabit card for optimal settings for a gigabit network. I was wondering if anyone knew what the tcp recieve window should be for this? or should it just be left at default?

You're fine at default. (Which is typically ~1500 bytes)

If you change the size of packets, you have to make sure the switch/hub/router/etc you're connecting to is also xmit/receiving at that size as well. It ends up being somewhat of a task to get everything talking correctly.

One thing you may want to check out, is the actual network drivers. For instance, on Nvidia based chipsets & NICs you can tweak the network throttling. NForce drivers throttle by default to use less CPU (which gives you less throughput).

The throttling slows you down considerably. On my NV/NForce based boxes, usually set it up so it maximizes performance. The CPU hit is minimal and it speeds up large file transfers (multiple gigs) considerably.
